Thank you, I am really pleased with the results.
Hi Rob, I've rented a 70-200Z + 2x TC combination but don't seem to be getting comparable results to you wide open at 400mm f/5.6. Contrast improves significantly one stop down at f/8 - even a third of a stop down is markedly better on fine detail like hair. Is that true for your copies or do I perhaps have a dud?
The rental TC looks a bit worse for wear (chipped paint etc) and I can see a bit of tilt/swing on the right side wide open at landscape distances...I have requested a swap but would be great to hear what a good copy combination looks like.

Mine wide open is very good. I suspect your TC maybe worth trying another to validate your findings. I tend to use all my lenses wide open with or without TC's.

Belated thanks for this, Rob. I haven't been able to get my hands on another TC for testing, but went ahead and picked up a 70-200Z anyway at a good price. If anything my lens is a bit more contrasty at 200mm than the rental one, so hopefully I'll have the same luck with a 2x when I find one.
