Congratulations to Karl Witt for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners
Made my first trip to Arizona, stayed in Sedona and ventured a bit North to Slide Rock State Park. Absolutely beautiful walk along the river basin.
I am new to landscape photography, so much different than Nature/bird photography.
Feel free to please C&C openly, comp, color, sharpness, sky etc so I can continue to learn and train my eyes to details.
On this one I wonder if the large rock is too centered? I very slightly cropped in from the right to less center it.
Thanks for the visit!
Karl

I've been here and this photo is quite true-to-life so great job there. I would say the big rock is too centered, yes. Doesn't take away from how beautiful the shot is.

Thanks for the comments Catherina, glad the shot represented your memory of this place. The more I look the more I am comfortable with the rock placement ........... but yes it is close to center

Great vibrant, colorful and tack sharp image Karl!
I visited here in 1967 while at Ft Huachuca, AZ. You nailed the variance in the color of the rocks! The mountain cliff in the bg is extremely sharp and detailed!
Centering a subject is not always bad! Symmetry and isolation allow this very well! Whether intentional or not, you went "outside da box" here Karl. That is ALWAYS good!
Super brother!

Being centered is fine with a strong subject in the center.
What I would advise when looking for composition is to keep it all in the sun or all in the share. I typically am not a fan of different strong lighting changes between sun and shade.

Had I known I would have given you some advice for a first timer to Sedona. West Fork at Oak Creek for one. Red Rock Loop Rd. where Crescent Moon area is. Which offers Oak Creek and the non crowded view of Cathedral Rock. Culture Park Rd that overlooks the mountains to the north and east.

Karl, really beautiful image! This is one of the nicer shots I’ve seen from Slide Rock State Park. Your composition works beautifully, with natural diagonal lines in all four quadrants leading the eye to the big boulder. Centering does work in many situations, and yours is not centered vertically, so that helps keep it dynamic. The sun and shade mix works great here and you have managed it well in processing. I also love the cool/warm complementary color tones. In my opinion you have the freshest photograph for the Jan. 3 Thread of the Week and you have my vote.

Good to hear on the comp. Thankfully I was able to come up with a nice balance on sun/shade in post. Thank you for your thoughts and comments, appreciated.

You young whippersnapper you!
I understand all the "rules" but rules are made to be modified..wont say "broken" just modified.
The rock@rocks anchor the foreground....draws your eye right into the frame without the sides or bg obscurring ones view!
Happy New Year!

Hi Ross, I really appreciate your input on this one and I know you will also speak up when things aren't quite right and I respect that input.
I'm thrilled you like it, and I am learning what makes this comp work by some of the input I have been given by you and Dan. Thanks for casting a vote, that is monumental to me at this point!

Sweet shot Karl! I think the boulder placement is fine. I like the depth of focus that F8 gave you at 24mm, and processing is spot on.
Looks like a great trip and wonderful location.
Not a critique, more of a thinking out loud... Coming from the pre-digital landscape age, I can't help but wonder if a polarizer or graduated ND filter would have brought anything to the table? Maybe deepen the blue sky and pull some reflections out of the water, but still, with the result you already have being so nice, it's hard to imagine much real-world improvement. Add to that, filters, even the best, do add another layer of potentially image degrading "glass" between you and the subject. Besides, I like the rock color reflected in the water, without that, it would be an entirely different balance to the photo.

Nice Karl. The texture and color really shows how dynamic this area is geologically. My wife and I never made it to slide rock, but this makes me want to go back and visit it!
