p.1 #1 · South Dakota

I shot the following in September 2022. While posting to another thread I was reminded of this shot due to the unusual circumstances that put me in the right place. I was put in the position to take it by a failed drive shaft on my motorcycle. While waiting (hours) for my tow, this storm moved to the south of me. I grabbed my camera and the one lens I had with me (the 24-70/2.8) and shot this. Of the hundreds of photos taken on the 5500-mile trip, this is perhaps my favorite.

Thanks Jung and Douglas!
For the life of me I don't know why I didn't go portrait orientation with the camera and shoot a 3- or 4-shot pano to get a bit more image on the right... I certainly had the time to do it! Nonetheless, I love the image. Not so much the four hours in 90°F heat waiting for a tow.

Beautiful black & white image, and interesting backstory. I’ve camped and shot in SD and nearby WY in late spring/early summer and those storms can get intense!

Thanks!
A little bit about the process on this one. It was shot with the Canon R5 and (adapted) EF 24-70 f/2.8 L @ f/9. Basic (color) processing was done in Lr Classic after applying AI NR*, and image was exported as a 16-bit TIFF. Conversion to B/W was done in Ps via Channel Mixer. There was a bit of moderate selective curves adjustment to balance the brightness of the landscape vs. the sky.

* even though this was shot at ISO 100, the fact that I wound up using more of the red channel than green or blue resulted in the appearance of some visible noise, particularly in the smooth, darker gray areas. The "AI" noise reduction in Lr Classic really helped to tame the noise, without negatively impacting fine detail.

I hope some of the local folks stopped by to visit because that is a a lot of time to sit on the side of a road!! Great image, sorry about the bike. I'm sure that wasn't cheap.

Haha, not much traffic out there... 85 mi west of Pierre on Hwy. 34. Still, I bet a half dozen kind folks stopped and asked if I needed assistance!
Luckily, the bike was under warranty, so all costs were covered, including my hotel and airfare two ways since I had to leave the bike there for a month :-P

Those silos give you a sense of scale of how vast, empty and flat that area is! Wonderful image.

Yep! Those silos are *big*, they are at least 30 feet in diameter.

I think this shot does a great job showcasing the natural landscape and showcasing the beauty in its simplicity. Nice!

Reminds me of Iowa! Horizon to horizon of emptiness in the Winter season.
Love it there!
Excellent composition here!

That is IMO a stunning B&W! Love the draw of the side road line, the drop of rain rays, the glow of the 4 structures near the rain and the wonderful contrast in this image.
Sorry to hear of the driveshaft failure, what an amazing trip 5500 miles on a motorcycle must have been

Excellent!
Karl
