These lenses are internal focusing making them good candidates for metal hoods (unlike the EF 50mm f/1.4 or the current set of RF STM primes). You could try a short, 67mm metal lens hood if you want to shave off a bit of bulk and length.

That's a good idea! Thanks.

Bryan at TDP has put up the initial lens quality images for this lens (and the RF 24mm F1.4 VCM lens as well) https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=39543&Title=First-Looks-at-Canon-RF-50mm-F1-4-L-VCM-Lens-Image-Quality

Looks good to me so far

Well after saying I wasn’t going to get this lens in favor of the RF 50mm f/1.2, I changed my mind and ordered the RF 50mm f/1.4 VCM for the lighter weight, faster and quieter AF and better handling. My 35 VCM is so much nicer to use, it got me thinking of downgrading my 50.

Exactly why I chose the RF 50 / 1.4L over a used RF 50 / 1.2L, which could be had for basically the same cost. I've only had it for two days, but I'm liking it more than a little. Maybe I'd like the RF 50 / 1.2L more for the extra third of a stop and potentially "higher IQ", but I'm thinking I'm going to be more happy with smaller size/weight, and the faster AF, so no buyer's remorse here!

Shipped my RF 50mm f/1.2 out today and have the 1.4 VCM incoming tomorrow so won't be able to do a direct comparison. Looking forward to giving it a try during the holidays.

I still wish they'd make a lens between the RF 50/1.8 and this. Basically a 50mm version of the RF35 f1.8 IS. A non-L 50 f1.4 or 1.8, with IS, with improved performance over the RF 50 1.8 (less vignetting, etc) and a smaller and lighter form factor than the RF 50 f1.4.

This would fill the APS-C stabilized short portrait lens gap for the APS-C bodies without internal stabilization.

I am absolutely not someone who fetishizes out of focus areas/bokeh, but the creamy soft backgrounds on this lens are stunning.

(Also, the people talking lawsuits because of distortion correction software need to take a long vacation someplace warm)

Sincerely agree. I want the Canon equivalent of the Sony 50 2.5 -- small, light, maybe takes a hit on light gathering, but better built and with better optical performance. I love Canon bodies and will be buying back into the RF system at some point in '25, but the absence of these "middle ground" primes between $500 and $900 is a really big drawback to me.

I got the 50 and 24 VCM lenses on Friday and they are both really great! Ridiculously sharp and fast AF in the AF

Do you find them equally sharp or do you find the 24mm to be sharper as the reviews/tests suggest?

Any experience with 50mm RF 1.2 vs 1.4?

Agree - might as well make it f/1.6 so that we can distinguish all the RF 50s just by aperture.

I haven't done a deep dive into either one yet, but with what I've seen just taking candids, both are exceptional in sharpness wide open. I owned the 50 1.2L for a couple years but I sold it as I stopped using it as much. I got the urge to start shooting wider again and thought about getting another, but this one appealed to me due to the smaller size and super fast AF. I like to shoot things that move
