I was hoping to get some astro shots but the clouds rolled in and covered the stars. I thought the sunset was going to be a bust but the first 2 shots were both about 4s exposures when it was almost completely dark, I was able to capture the faint alpine glow still hitting the clouds and peak. I'll probably bring a 14-24 2.8 and a real tripod if(when) I go back.

I'd highly recommend going. It's a relatively short and easy hike for quick backcountry trip which is the best way to avoid crowds in the park.
Looks like you were to the south/west of the lake, partway up the flank of Tresidder? I was in Yosemite in April but Tioga Road is closed that time of year and unfortunately we had cloudy skies all three evenings. Then the day we did the Upper Yosemite Fall trail we had full sun. That was probably the most miserable I've been on a hike going up and by the time we were heading down the trail was packed. At least we had enough water - I can't tell you how many people I saw with improper footwear or with a single water bottle for 2-3 people.
Exactly right, I was at about 9900 ft, probably a 20-30 minute scramble off trail. It would be a little dicey to do in the dark or wet.
That is a classic valley hike, usually pretty free if you go early but on the way back you'll run into traffic jams of many unprepared people wondering if they'll be able to make it.
