p.1 #1 · Sony A7CR vs A7CII vs FX30 For Video

Hello,

I want to replace my ZV-E1 because it overheats after like 20-30 minutes of straight shooting indoors. I use an A7IV in the same environment and it takes much much longer to run into any heat issues. I have read that the A7CR does pretty well with heat and the A7CII less so. Obviously FX30 will be the best as it has a fan but I already have full frame lenses so I am less inclined to go this route.

I use this video to shoot YouTube videos indoors. The camera is on a tripod or C-stand. Autofocus is very important for me. I typically shoot 4k 24 10bit 4 4 2 slog and do internal recording. Any recommendations on these cameras?

I would be looking at an open box A7CR for $2,400, and new A7CII for $2,200, and FX30 new for $1,800 (though I may need a new lens).

None of the R models do full-pixel (aka open gate) readout for video in any full-frame mode. Only reading a fraction of the sensor and processing much less data does use less energy. Expect more noise, less detail, more artifacts. Their Super35 capture is pretty decent though.

I thought in 24p 4k 442 it will do full sensor width but with pixel binning?
So what camera would you recommend? I suppose it doesn't have to be a Sony.

The A7CII is an option. I can't justify the price of an FX3.

I use a pair of A7CRs to run my YouTube channel. I had the A7ivs but they overheated too much. A quick fix of your camera spends a lot of time locked off in a studio is to buy some stick on heat sinks. That totally solved my A7iv overheating issues.

There are a few reasons that I upgraded to the CRs. I’m also a photographer and the 60mp small form factor camera is awesome on that front. I haven’t noticed any quality loss moving away from the oversampled 7k from the iv, especially in terms of output for YouTube. The totally lack of overheating (for me) is great too.

One silly but awesome bonus is that the CR can livestream 4k24/30 while charging. That really simplifies my setup from the A7iv with a dummy battery, hdmi out to a capture card, and usb c cable to transfer files.

That said, the sensor readout is slower and iso performance worse on the R compared to the cii, so you have to pick your battles.

All in all, I am very pleased with my solution for my own use cases.

Thanks,
Baron

Here’s a video using the cr with the 35gm. Lowest quality 4k 4:2:0 8 bit, auto iso, auto WB, 30fps. straight out of camera on video and audio except running the audio through Auphonic to normalize loudness. The same settings I use for live-streaming.
