p.3 #1 · A7Rv back to A7Riii or A7iv

A7R5 ist not about 61MP... it feels same as 41, 45 or 50...

The big plus points of the R5 are the better AF performance (better than A7 IV), the swivel display, the much better IBIS (at present only A9 II has same stabi level), the bigger viewfinder.

And better menu structure than older models...

So I sold after summer holidays my A7 IV... which was the better, more responsive camera than my former A7R2-3.

Plus the R5 has auto focus bracketing, which was also recently added to the A74

But the R3 and R4 Mark 1 are great value for people who shoot slowly. From a pure IQ perspective the sensor hasn't improved much from the R3 forward.

We should have the R6 by the end of next year, which could be a factor for people wanting a higher megapixel camera.

I agree with the comment that the improvement of 60 mp over 40-50 is minor.

Helicon Software has a product called Helicon Remote which allows auto focus bracketing for Sony A7III, A7RIII, A1, A7RIV cameras along with most Canon and Nikon. For Sony, the camera needs to tethered to a computer or phone via cable.
Have not used it myself, just a FYI that it may be possible to auto focus bracket with the A7RIII.

you get the A7RV for the way better screen, menu system, stabilization, practical uses, not really for the image quality. You've already taken the financial hit...... going backwards isnt going to get you a whole lot back, and it's probably going to be painful to use in comparison. I would go sideways to the A7iv before considering the Riv or Riii

I use the compensation dial heaps on an A7R2 and A7R4, both of which have the value marked so you can see it at a glance. It's an important feature to me.

Thanks for mentioning this as I've just started looking for a second A7R4 and was considering the A7r5 but this, and the relocation of the C1 button, seem silly, pointless and maybe enough reason to just get a second a7R4.

I have bought a7r3 thrice now, and I sold it every time for some reason or the other. I don't like a7r4 or a7r5 because of their noise profile and just too much resolution. They can't be a general purpose camera for me for this reason, although even a7r3 pushes the limits on this one and a7r4 and a7r5 have better AF.

Now I shoot with A1, their best body as of today, for all kind of work.

I will buy an a7r5 Mark II if they reduce the megapixels to 40 something.

Will the success of Nikon's manual focus oriented Zf lead to something similar and special from Sony? That market is there is they want it. That would make a natty adjunct to their banal middle-of-the-road camera ranges.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1828981/

Cameras look bland and uninteresting these days, they are like so many consumer gadgets. Nothing special, no character, just faster this and that, more dials, (much) more weight.

Resale value is horrendous, 30-40% off a high base. They can do better, be better. Interesting too that the megapixel arms race fizzled out. Hence the model angst you see.

Most photographers are primarily interested in creating images, not cameras.

Cameras today are highly competent. That's a problem for manufacturers needing to sell stuff, not photographers.

I can't possibly imagine going back to my a7r3 or 4 from my r5. That flip screen along with lossless compression, AF + AI + EVF and menu improvements with other smaller things were huge to me.

I am extremely happy with my R5. Literally that tilt flip screen has changed the way I shoot and made it such a joy being able to get images so much easier now. My images also don't have any more noise than what I had before and honestly my images just look even better. Though I did upgrade to the best GM II lenses so that did help a bit. The a7r5 literally made me fall in love with photography in a new way.

But hey it's your money, up to you.

I'll miss the screen on my A7RV but I've decided to do it. The files are just murdering my computer to the point where Lightroom Classic is practically unusable (and yes the machine is up to snuff). Now I just need to find an A7R3 for a decent price.

It’s an Adobe problem tbh. Why is viewing images in Lightroom so much slower than in photo mechanic or other culling software?

I think the answer for now is to cull the images with other software first and only import a small number into Lightroom.

Hopefully Adobe will fix the lag

You could also shoot RAW-M instead

I recommend the A7iv. Feels great, shoots great.

The EVF and speed of the A7Rv can make shooting more enjoyable. I’ve recently spent a lot of money on two full frame systems and one medium format, all differing manufacturers and I am 100% certain that my images are as bad as ever. That said, some of my favorite 13”x19” prints are from 35mm and MF film.
