I’m hoping for a “real world” comparison between MK1 and MK2.
So identical portraits shot with both lenses. Just to see if the rendering of the Mk1 version really is so unique and therefore better.

I asked Fred if he's going to review this lens, but got no answer .

I completely agree with this take. I use the 85mm GM Mark I for about 80% of my shots and have never missed one due to its so-called ‘slow’ autofocus. It’s more than capable for portrait work. The lens’s rendering has spoiled me, and even those unfamiliar with photography can notice its distinctive quality. It’s truly a classic.

Could a faster autofocus improve it? Maybe, but I don’t think most people would need it.

As an avid user of 85mm lenses, I expected the new 85mm GM II to excite me, but surprisingly, I feel indifferent. My GAS is pretty much nonexistent this time 😂

If a reader sends me one there will of course be a comparison.
But I am not spending two grand on buying the MK II myself.
I really couldn't care less if it was any sharper than the MK I,
with the latest lenses I have to reduce clarity and structure anyway to get a pleasing look for portraits.
As I don't shoot sports I also don't care about improved AF speed, not even once I missed a shot during a wedding or portrait shoot because of the MK I's slow AF.

This is really of interest to me. I might go for the Mk1 version, now that prices might go down a bit (or already are). Is there a chance to see some pictures that demonstrate this quality that makes it a “classic” and differentiates it from other 85 mm lenses? This would be highly appreciated.

It’s already out of stock in the Sony European store. I think Sony has made the right bet with this 85f1.4.

How would you rank the new 85 GM II against the Sigma 105 1.4? I would be very interested to know. The difference in weight and size is of course well known. The main area of use would be portraits. Does the Sigma have any advantage over the new Sony 85mm 1.4?

None can really answer as it’s not yet available. It will for sure have better AF on Sony bodies, be smaller, much lighter. Now, 85 is no 105, especially at f1.4. The magic of the 105f1.4 will probably not be encountered in photos taken with the new GM.

This lens will be a hot seller. I have no doubt about it. So really a pre-order is a good idea here.

Yeah, it's really all about the focal length and what arises from that. The 105 is great at what it does - downsides are it's big, it has merely-goodish focussing (fine for portraiture)... and when those two things aren't a problem, the question of which you would prefer is all about the focal length. People who choose the 105 do so because they need maximum background defocus, because it renders heads with less distortion for close-up shots, and because it in general provides more compression, and the most telephoto-style look that's still within a comfortably short-ish working distance from the subject. Everything longer starts to get a little distant and less practical (though I myself don't mind that - I actually prefer to shoot long, I like the resulting look more).

A theoretical 85mm f/1.2 would still have a smaller absolute aperture than the 105 f/1.4 (70mm rather than 75mm). The 105 is basically... the most you can get, of everything, prior to the working distance to the model becoming potentially unmanageable.

Need to remember with a 85mm lens with a 61mpx sensor in crop mode it's 127mm at 26mpx. More than enough juice for a portrait type lens. Honestly if I got one and need to do portraits I would jump in crop mode with it. Its a great option

They haven't translated it, but Lenstip's Polish site has its review up already.
https://www.optyczne.pl/596.1-Test_obiektywu-Sony_FE_85_mm_f_1.4_GM_II_Wst%C4%99p.html

If anyone was wondering about cats eye differences between the 85GM and 85GMII, here they are:

Center: 85GM Top 85GMII Bottom

APS-C Corner: 85GM Top 85GMII Bottom

FF Corner: 85GM Top 85GMII Bottom

Looks like the original is still superior in this regard, which given the size isn't surprising. I think the original GM is still going to be the character favorite for lot's of people.

Interesting that the image quality at f1.4 in the centre measures better for this lens than the best performance of its predecessor anywhere. Not something mentioned by other testers.

Just a little cyan/magenta LoCA in this rapid transition event lens, here at f1.4 and f2:

https://www.lenstip.com/2482-news-Sony_FE_85_mm_f_1.4_GM_II_-_sample_shots.html

(5th and sixth last images)

'There is a pleasant cat’s eye effect to the bokeh which suits portraits.'

https://petapixel.com/2024/08/28/sony-85mm-f-1-4-gm-ii-review-smaller-sharper-speedier/

'pleasant cat's eye' are not words I expected to see together. Tell it to the Voigtlander detraction army.

'I would say that the overall rendering is more technically excellent than artistic.' 'the most egregious thing I can come up with optically is that I don’t always find the rendering as “magical” as some 85mm lenses I’ve tested, but that’s probably still stretching things.'

He has one bokeh comparison with the Sigma 85mm, and a couple of very detailed landscape images. I won't express an opinion as it's not my bailiwick. But it certainly looks fit for purpose, along the lines of the GM 50/1.4.

Optyczne / Lenstip found the resolution to be very impressive. Google translation from Optyczne: "at f/2.8 we note a result of 85.8 +- 1.5 lpmm, which makes the Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM II the second sharpest lens in the history of our tests on the 42.4 MPix Sony FE system sensor."

I am a little bit surprise, Dustin found the bokeh from the Sigma 85 DN a little bit softer and better:

"I would say that this is still an area where I would slightly favor the Sigma DN, however, as I feel like the bokeh is just a little softer."

I am not sure, if I should switch from Sigma 85 DN to 85 GM II....
