p.1 #1 · Two Rivers Lake Sunrise - RMNP - Image Heavy

This one is going to be a lot of images with mostly the same compositions to show how the color transition went. Just a warning.

Woke up this morning at 2AM to try for some moonset and sunrise shots of Two Rivers Lake up in RMNP. Chose this one purely because I haven't done a sunrise here before. Was boots on trail at 336AM, arrived at the lake at 5AM. The forecast showed 40% sky cover here and east of here, which can go either way in terms of sunrise light. Photopills predicted sunrise time as being 620AM, and it's often +/-10 minutes.

When I arrived, the moon was barely visible, but was quickly overtaken by clouds.

A bit later, still before the blue hour.

This was at 524AM, the camera was starting to pick up colors that I couldn't see with the naked eye.

532AM, even more light and color getting picked up by the camera.

554AM, the color and light is now visible with the naked eye.

558AM, if I had to pick one shot from this morning as my favorite, it would be this one. Shortly after this, it started drizzling, but that didn't stop the light. Had to keep flipping my camera around on the tripod to wipe off the lens, and tried holding my hand over the top to keep more rain from hitting it. Not a lot of success on that count.

609AM, the light starts going reddish orange.

613AM, getting more solidly orange.

618AM, starts looking a tad more golden.

619AM, if I hadn't seen this with my own eyes, I'd swear the processing was overcooked.

622AM, the light goes fully golden.

627AM, the light starts shifting back orange!

629AM, the light shifted all the way back to reddish.

The light and color kept fading from there out and I packed up and rolled at 640AM. Looking eastward, it looked like the sun had gone up behind the clouds.

Easily the more glorious sunrise light I've ever had. I've seen it shift red - orange - gold many times, but never back to orange - red after the gold color shift. Never had the light hit so far in advance of the forecasted sunrise time. Never had the colors last this long either; usually it's 5-10 minutes max.

There were mid-height clouds present all around starting around 515AM. I'm no meteorologist, but my guess is that light from beyond the horizon to the east was hitting the bottom of those clouds and bouncing back down on the mountains I was looking at.

Anyways, those of you who made it this far, hope you enjoyed it!

Interesting to see the series as it evolved over time. Looks like it was quite a show in a beautiful setting.

Beautiful. Goodonya for getting up and out there for this. Can't pick a favorite. These would make a great sequence in a slide show.

Thank you all! It was definitely the most exhilarating sunrise I've seen. I know the usual standard on this forum is to post just the few best, but I felt like showing the progression of light in this unique circumstance was worth showing.

It’s cool to see the series with light changing. Nice job getting out there in the wee hours. That sunrise light is intense!
