    Voigtlander 50/3.5 APO-Lanthar - Intro:

Is the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar the best compact Nifty Fifty M-mount lens?

       Leica M10-R Black Paint with Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar

In February 2024, Cosina announced new lenses, including a 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar designed to complement their existing Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar. While having two high-performance 50mm lenses might seem redundant, they have distinct differences. The new f/3.5 lens is notably more compact, being 8mm shorter and featuring thinner barrels compared to the f/2 version. This is particularly important for rangefinder shooters, as the 50mm framelines are now visible without obstruction when the lens is used without the supplied hood. Besides the size, a key feature of the new lens is its closer focusing capability, ranging from 0.45m to 0.35m depending on the lens type, compared to the 7m minimum focus distance of the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar. Also, the lens includes a tactile rangefinder feature, alerting you when the rangefinder disengages, indicating that live view will be necessary for focusing beyond that distance.

Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type II finish options

Cosina offers the CV 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar in two classic aesthetic "Types." Type I resembles the rare Leica LTM version of the Nikon 50/3.5 collapsible lens and is available in Two-Tone black/silver brass or matte black-painted aluminum, weighing 245 grams and 150 grams, respectively—yes, only 150 grams for the black version!

Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type I inspired by Leica LTM version of the Nikon 50/3.5 collapsible lens

The Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type II version is also available in two finishes: silver brass (250 grams) and black-painted aluminum (175 grams). One of its main advantages is its closer focusing distance of 0.35 meters, compared to 0.45 meters for the Type I. However, a notable drawback is that aperture and focusing adjustments are controlled by the same ring, so you need to set the aperture before focusing.

The Type I version features a distinctive barrel design that mimics a classic collapsible lens, though unfortunately, it is not collapsible.

       Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type I Two-Tone

In this review, I will start by testing the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 Type II Silver Brass "Prototype" lens, but I plan to evaluate the other models once they are available in production. I'll explore the technical aspects of the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar, testing its resolution, contrast, and optical aberrations. I will also compare its aesthetic rendering qualities with the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar.

All four models share the same optical design, featuring 8 elements in 6 groups, including 4 elements of anomalous partial dispersion glass. Notably, the design avoids aspherical elements, which can show structure in specular highlights and affect rendering. Instead, it draws inspiration from Planar "symmetric" designs. It seems Cosina is focusing on low-dispersion glass to enhance rendering quality, moving away from aspherical elements in their latest lenses.

Unlike most 50mm M-lenses, the new Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar from Cosina offers close-focusing capabilities of 0.45m or 0.35m, depending on the model. This enhances the lens's versatility for close-up shots when using live view. For rangefinder shooting, the lens features a tactile cue that alerts shooters when focusing beyond 0.68m, indicating that rangefinder focusing is no longer possible.

       Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type II extended to 0.35m

Like previous Cosina lenses, the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar features an all-metal construction, available in brass or aluminum, and a robust helicoid unit. The focus ring on the Type II model operates smoothly, allowing for precise adjustments. The 50mm framelines remain clear of obstruction when focusing at infinity without the supplied hood, with only slight intrusion at close distances.Mounting and unmounting the lens can be a bit challenging because the main and only ring rotates. However, with the aid of two metal poles, it becomes easier to handle. In the silver version, the red mount marking might be hard to see in low light.

Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar Type II with red mount mark position

The aperture ring rotates in half-stop increments, but the Type II model combines aperture and focus adjustments on the same ring, so the aperture should be set before focusing to avoid altering the focus. The Type II offers an impressive minimum focus distance of 0.35m, but this results in a longer focus throw. In contrast, the Type I model has separate rings for aperture and focus, which avoids this issue and provides a shorter focus throw, though its minimum focus distance is 0.45m. Its compact size, ideal balance, and lightweight design make it an excellent choice for Leica M bodies, especially for those seeking exceptional image quality in a 50mm manual focus lens.

The aperture mechanism is equipped with 10 blades offering 10-point sunstars.

Cosina has released an MTF graph illustrating the lens's resolution and contrast both wide open and at f/5.6.

None of the four models include a focus tab, which some Leica shooters might miss. Despite being a prototype, this copy offers an exceptionally smooth rotation of the focusing ring and is perfectly centered and aligned with my rangefinder. I will update you if there are any changes when I receive the production model.

It's worth noting that the Type II black paint finish model of the Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar has been updated since the initial February announcement. The material has been changed from brass to aluminum. It's unclear whether the entire lens exterior is aluminum or a mix of brass and aluminum, but the weight has decreased from 250g to 175g, which many users will appreciate. I will update the review if I learn more about this.

As much as I like the look of the pseudo-collapsible 50mm F3.5 and would love it to be retractable, but there is a serious reason Cosina didn't make it real. It's much more expensive to craft collapsible module precisely. The rare Voigtlander 50mm F2 Heliar 250y limited edition collapsible is developing longitudinal play over time which is affecting focusing precision. I think they made good option of providing that distinct and interesting vintage look without sacrificing mechanical quality and jumping up pricing.

Though with inability to collapse the Voigtlander 50mm F3.5 is loosing its functional advantage over version II, which looks beautifully crafted with its compact sizing and wide focus ring. Looking forward to see more details on this lens rendering and usage feedbacks!

In my opinion, this issue is likely due to production tolerances. A stiff, non-collapsible barrel probably has tighter tolerances, which I assume is crucial for an APO-Lanthar lens with such high performance. Vintage lenses with significant spherical aberration and lower resolution/contrast aren't as impacted by a collapsible design. Also, Cosina notes that dust can get into digital sensors, which also makes sense in this context.

That being said, I wish it wasn’t the case and that the lens had actually collapsed.

I'm really liking the idea of the matte black pseudo-collapsable version after coming to terms with it not collapsing. I'm looking at that gap as weight savings + a place to better hold the camera strap that I always wrap around the lens when putting the camera away.

My personal favorites are the Type I (panda) and Type II (black paint). I need to handle the Type I in person before making a final decision, but for the weight savings alone, the Type II black paint seems like a great choice. I’m checking with Cosina to confirm which parts of the black paint model are aluminum and which are brass, as I’ve heard it’s a mix.

In the T1, could the exposed interface of the inner shaft and the inner surface of the focus ring, as you focus back and forth, lead to crusting/wear (over time and in difficult conditions)? If I have not explained this well enough, the video on p17 of the earlier thread shows the inner ring surfaces at 3:30 and 4:14 - p.17 #10

The smooth powder coating of the black version looks different from the lightly pitted surface of the extending ring in the metal version.

The line cross of the 30lpmm and 40lpmm at the wide edge (18mm image height) at f5.6 is a nice touch.

'which parts of the black paint model are aluminum and which are brass, as I’ve heard it’s a mix.'
Looks like it's a mix alright - it's an alloy, or maybe was, who can tell:

'The tube of the black/silver version consists of a material mix of brass and aluminum with a weight of 245 g'
I think the black T2 will win me over, all things considered. Some price guidance on their German page, link below: 700-750 Euro. But: 'All information as of July 2024, subject to change!'

Fred, I don't think this sentence is correct?

The Type II lens features a distinctive barrel design that mimics a classic collapsible lens, though unfortunately, it is not collapsible.

I think he meant type I
Whether type I is collapsible or not is still a mystery to me. I have not seen a single picture of type I being collapsed.

Infinity Resolution and Contrast on Leica M10-R (41MP)

The Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 APO-Lanthar excels in resolution, contrast, and control of lateral chromatic aberration. Despite its slower maximum aperture of f/3.5, it performs remarkably well wide open. There is a slight improvement in high-frequency detail starting at f/5.6, but this is only noticeable at the very corners and is minimal. For detailed landscapes, shooting wide open is perfectly viable.

For the best image quality, stopping down to f/5.6 is ideal, as it also significantly reduces vignetting. Considering its size, number of elements, and lack of aspherical elements, Cosina has truly created something special with this lens.

The real question now is how it compares to the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar, which, in my opinion, is Cosina’s best lens ever made. I’ll be testing that next...

  1. Distance: Infinity
  2. Focus: Center - Best of three shots at maximum magnification
  3. White Balance: Daylight
  4. Both lenses are perfectly centered, as verified with my decentering test.
  5. Software used: Lightroom with FM Default Landscape Sharpening; all other settings are at default.

PS: Vignetting, Chromatic Aberration (CA), and distortion were not corrected either in post-processing or in-camera.

    Center Resolution and Contrast
Infinity Resolution and Contrast on Leica M10-R (41MP)

Center: f/3.4 vs f/4 - There isn't much improvement at the center when stopping down from wide open to f/4. This lens performs optimally at its widest aperture in the center.

Center: f/4 vs f/5.6: Once again, there isn’t much change -- perhaps just a very slight improvement.

Center: f/5.6 vs f/6.7: Just like before.

Center: f/6.7 vs f/8: Diffraction begins to reduce some of the detail.

Mid-Field: f/3.5 vs f/4: At mid-field, there’s no noticeable difference when stopping down to f/4.

Mid-Field: f/4 vs f/5.6: I notice a very slight improvement, but it's minimal.

Mid-Field: f/5.6 vs f/6.7: Nothing changes

Mid-Field: f/6.7 vs f/8: Diffraction starts to become more noticeable in this area as well.

The key question for me is whether I'd swap my Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar for the f/3.5 version. Since I mostly use APO lenses stopped down a bit, it's something I'm considering. I'll make a final decision at the end of this review once I have a clearer understanding of how the lens performs and compares.

As for your question: If I had silver chrome brass M bodies, I would definitely choose the Type II Silver Chrome; it’s stunning. However, for my M cameras, I would probably opt for the Black Paint to match the finish of my M-D, M-P, and M10-R.
