What are thoughts on the new Tamron superzoom lens? The smaller apertures are not as great at the 28-200 starting off at 2.8, but this is a lot of focal range in a single lens and it has stabilization. The size is also really small for what zoom range it offers.

I would've preferred a 24-200 variable aperture but if the IQ is much better than the 28-200 it could be an excellent backpacking lens. I think I really just want the Nikon 24-120 f4 though.

I’ve been wondering if Tamron would release a 2nd Gen version of the 28-200, with VC and improved image quality. This might accomplish that but will have to wait and see what the reviewers say. Still think I’d prefer 24mm over the extra reach on the long end.

Definitely sounds like an interesting lens. Could be a very useful lens for times when changing lenses would be a pain.
As for starting at 28mm I think super zooms do that to make the lenses smaller, lighter, and less complicated. 24mm does not really replace having a wide angle lens if you want to take wide pictures anyway. So make the superzoom a bit smaller and save some weight and space in your bag a wider lens like a 17-28mm or 16-35mm.
p.1 #7 · New Tamron All-In-One Lens: 28-300mm F4-7.1
A superzoom that weighs 610g, with built-in image stabilization, Tamron's fastest VXD motor focus, and that costs only $899 - sounds interesting.
F7.1 is a bit disappointing but the lens is very reasonably priced; thus, even if it isn't a top performer, it can be very useful for daylight travel photography. One would need to pair the 28-300 with a fast lens.
p.1 #8 · New Tamron All-In-One Lens: 28-300mm F4-7.1
I'll be anxious to see how the IQ holds up at f/8. F/7.1 doesn't bother me as I'd have it stopped down anyways, and I'm guessing keeping the size small was a bigger priority than f-stop.
p.1 #10 · New Tamron All-In-One Lens: 28-300mm F4-7.1
A 300mm lens at f/7.1 has the same depth of field as a 150mm lens at f/3.5, or a 75mm lens at f/1.8 - which is to say that it's actually fairly wide and all other things being equal, it should give very good blur rendition and strongly isolate the background. If it's as good as the Tamron 28-200, it should replace several OEM lenses at a fraction of the cost, weight and size.

For nearly every purpose of mine 200-240mm is enough. Maybe it doesn't add much weight to trombone a bit further but I'd prefer 5.6 max to 300mm. Honestly I'm waiting for my 55-200sam to be reformed to the E/fE mount, 35-210mm even better.

Pair it with a 16-35 and you've got a good landscape kit for anything other than astrophotograhy.
I just watched a review and there is a astro lock option, think I'm saying that correctly, you can program the lens for where it focuses automaticaly to infinity. Which would be a nice function. The only downside is the f-stop of course.

Maybe with a star tracker, it could be alright for deep space objects?

I would be interested in this lens - despite the small apertures - if it were sharp (equal to or greater than the 28-200 or 50-300); there has not been much initial buzz on this lens, compared to other Tamron announcements, and so far there have been several 'decent, but don't expect great sharpness' type of comments, as opposed to when we saw reviews for the 28-200 and 50-300, which marveled at their sharpnes. I just picked up the 50-300 and am liking it a lot. Will wait for more reviews on this one, but initial assumptions are that it would be a decent lens for a beginner or traveller with moderate demands on a low MP body, but not great for enthusiasts with A7R type bodies... but take that with a grain of salt.

Hoping it's great in infrared like all their other lenses. Would be sweet to just have a single lens for IR landscapes. 300 is a great FL for mountains and such. Love that they kept the 67mm filter size

28-300's have been around and had VC forever. SLR versions maybe even lighter, 1.19lbs listed on one site

Most disappointing is that at wider apertures, corners don't look great even stopped down. Looks OK I guess. Set expectations accordingly for a super zoom.
I'd be curious to see a direct comparison to the 28-200 and whether there's a good reason to prefer that lens. VXD and VC are big improvements for this one at least.
