p.1 #1 · ADK Astrophotography so far this year

Hey folks,

I currently am recovering from a ruptured spleen which has honestly shifted my perspective on life. Sometimes you need to slow down... like a lot. I have been a little out of touch with photography over the past 2 years, but I feel as though that kind of came back with the eclipse this past year. The spark is back, and I am thankful I am able to engage in this hobby and what I have accomplished so far. It is such a wonderful art and adding the complexities of hiking and astrophotography really grounds me. I am happy to share some of the work I have captured and processed this year. Everything was taken in the Adirondacks, my "second home." I have completed the 46 as well as the 2 official NEU8 ultras within the park. All but 1 of these shots were taken atop a summit. Combing hiking with photography really lets me connect with my work even further.

All have been shot with Nikon mirrorless cameras. I will do my best to disclose the EXIF. I try to keep everything as realistic as possible despite tracking and stacking. Nothing here is faked such as pointing a camera one direction for a foreground and another for a sky or focal length blends. Nothing against that, but that wouldn't work for my style and how I feel about my work. The only exception is the eclipse shot, where I used a 14-24 to shoot the filtered shots, and a 24mm prime to shoot the corona shots on 2 separate Z7's so I would not to worry removing filters since I had 5 other cameras to manage. Both cameras were right next to each other and at 24mm.

Total Solar Eclipse timelapse. Z7 + Z 24 1.8 S & Z 14-24mm @ 24mm. 60 images stacked. 51 for eclipse phases with filter on. 9 during totality as HDR for Corona and landscape detail. All at ISO 64, f/8 for filtered shots (14-24), f/2 for corona shots (24m.

Rho Ophiuchi setting. Z6 + Z 70-200 2.8 S. 19 shots total. 18 tracked/stacked @ 120", f/2.8, ISO 1600. 1 @ 120", f/4, ISO 400 during blue hour

Milky Way Rainbow Pano. Z6 + Z 14-24 2.8 S. 24 images total. 13 tracked @ 20mm, 120", f/2.8, ISO 1600. 11 untracked blue hour blend, 3", f/5.6, ISO 100

An early Perseid. Pure luck here. Z7 + Z 14-24 f/2.8 S. 2 images combined. 1 @ 1.3", f/2.8, ISO 16000. 1 @ 30", f/5.6, ISO 64 for a cleaner foreground.

50mm tracked MW pano. Z6 + Z 50 1.8 S. 21 images combined. 9 tracked @ 120", f/2.2, ISO 800. 13 blue hour foreground blend @ 25", f/5.6, ISO 100

Telephoto star trails. Z6III + Z 70-200 2.8 S @135mm, 190 images combined. Spot healed the airplanes out of each one by one. 190x 30", f/4, ISO 3200.

Classic star trails. Z7 + Z 14-24 2.8 S @ 24mm. 160 images combined. Spot healed the airplanes out of each one by one. 160x 30", f/4, ISO 3200.

Many thanks! Certainly, a lot of time went into planning, shooting, and of course processing each. It is nice to hear how much you appreciate that.

Thank you! Yes, I love airglow. Some people don't like the added color, but personally I think it is a nice touch.

That would be sweet! I know Cloudynights is the place to be for astro, but we are more nightscapes over here so it could be cool.

Voted! The Star Trail photo one would think you took a space ship to Saturn to take a photo of the rings!

Also...at 66 and all I've been through the past several years I'm now referring "the golden years" as the rusty years..

Thank you! I got so lucky. I actually saw the whole thing go down with my eyes and my buddy was next to me too who saw it. I was like what are the chances I caught that? Sure enough....

Thank you!!!! I love thiss... heck, hopefully one day I will get to say the same thing as well, but I feel like with each shoot, each edit, and each experience I always learn something. It's a super rewarding hobby in that regard.

Incredible shots of a place I also know and love (although not nearly as well as you). My job has allowed me to explore the ADK at times but is also what keeps me from being there as much as I'd like. Your dedication to sharing the beauty of the Park is noble. Sorry to hear about your injury - hope you're able to get back at it soon.

Daniel, your body of work here is fantastic! I loved shooting in the Adirondack High Peaks region some years ago, and it’s very inspirational to see your beautiful take on these mountains with stunning night skies. And you are working hard to get there with your summit hikes.

I have voted - this set really deserves a thread of the week win 👍🏼

Thanks for the get well soon wishes, it is much appreciated... Likewise, my job also keeps me from being full time living in the ADK, but it has also allowed me to keep food on the table and enjoy the hobby that is photography. I totally understand where you are coming from. I love the Adirondacks. I have explored a lot, but there is even more to see. It is such a huge park filled with so many lakes, mountains, and towns.

Thank you so much Ross, coming from a renowned photographer like you, I really appreciate that. Where were you when you went to the HP's? All of these were taken throughout that region. I hope you enjoyed our wonderfully steep hikes up the drainage basins of mountains!
