p.1 #1 · Battery Grip for R5 ii

If the new battery grips for R5 ii ( BG20) is backwards compatible with the R5, R6, R6ii - why would the older R5 battery grip, (BG10) not be compatible with the R5ii?... especially if you put the new batteries in same...
Hmmm... any ideas?

Here is what the Digital Picture is saying

"The R5 II arives with a new battery grip, the Canon BG-R20. The Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip (B&H), the same grip used by the R5 and R6 II, is also compatible with the R5 II. However, the BG-R10 does not support 8K DCI, 8K UHD, RAW video, SRAW, and frame rates with Fine setting are not available. It does not support the fastest frame rates and is also not compatible with the new LP-E6P batteries."

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-R5-Mark-II.aspx#Battery

When I contacted B&H chat they indicated that the BG-R10 could not be used with the R5 mark ii. So I am not too sure which source is accurate.

I just contacted B&H again and now they lining up their response with what Digital Picture is saying adding "And the BG-R10 will also not support pre-shutter release function."

So compatible but lost of functionality for stills and videos.

Im hoping whoever has their hands on one can test this out. Doesn't make sense to me unless Canon crippled something internally in camera - but again, if new LP-E6P batteries are in the old BG10 grip - camera should read those batteries. and function properly. Im also a bit suspicious due to Canons M.O. with gear

Interesting its compatible at all! I might suspect there is an IC in the BG-10 grip that does not include the proper pins/connections/logic/rating for the higher capacity battery, and to pass some of the new commands associated with pre-shooting and other features.

But I have another question - have they said what happens if you put an LE-E6P in an older camera? Hopefully it doesn't over voltage it and turn it in to a brick, particularly if they are physically compatible.

Yes, Canon said they will push out a firmware update for older bodies to make the "P" batteries compatible.

---------

Just tossing out guessing why the BG10 grip isn't compatible with the R52:

1. The R52 is slightly thicker than the R5 so could be a size incompatibility, not a good water resistant seal. Similarly the BG20 might be "compatible" with the R5/R6 but overlap the body a bit but still form a good seal.

2. The BG10 hardware can't handle the "P" battery higher amperage and not something Canon can address by a firmware update. Would be kind of odd since they've already announced a forthcoming firmware update for bodies to make "P" batteries compatible, but possible.

3. Money. BG10 could be a good fit, firmware upgrade possible but Canon sees this as an opportunity to make a cash grab. Wouldn't be the first time.

I'd like to know if the ergonomics of the new grip have been improved over the old one, which I don't really like when holding the camera for vertical photos. Might be too much to ask for.

Just skimmed the freshly released online manual and it appears the BG10 is compatible but with reduced camera functionality.

Reduces continuous shooting speed and prevents selection of 8K DCI/8K UHD/RAW/SRAW movie recording size, Fine image quality, and 239.76/200.00/119.88/100.00/59.94/50.00 fps frame rates.
HDMI RAW output, still photo shooting during movie recording, High Frame Rate movies, and pre-continuous shooting are not available.

So it sounds like it IS compatible but the same functions are limited as if older batteries are used. Which makes me wonder if anyone has tested using new batteries in the BG10 - which in my limited opinion should power the camera body the same then…. I also hope the ergonomics are improved over the BG10 grip as the button placement wasn’t great.

Per manual, BG10’s functionality is identical regardless of battery model used or # of batteries installed.

From above page:

For optimal camera performance, use Battery Pack LP-E6P and Battery Grip BG-R20/BG-R20EP.

So for optimal performance, do not use Cooling Fan CF-R20EP!

The tables do not indicate any difference and Canon are not always precise with information, but they did omit the CF-R20EP on the same page it is mentioned.

Anyone come across the empty weight of the BG20? I've perused a few Canon English language sites but none mention any specs. I'd assume it's similar to BG10 but you know what they say about assuming.
