p.1 #1 · A hidden world in Haast Pass (New Zealand)

Just back from my annual South Island winter trip. Spent some time in the Haast Pass on this occasion, and visited this slot canyon which is right beside the road. In winter waders are pretty much essential, as access requires traversing a near-waist-deep pool of freezing glacial water (may be higher or lower depending on prevailing water levels.) In summer you could probably get away without waders, though the water would still be very cold - maybe not even that much warmer than in winter. I spent around an hour in here and despite being bone dry thanks to my waders, my feet were still quite numb by the time I left.
The 'beam' of light is actually a waterfall catching the light, and there is constantly water running over the top of the canyon making it a challenge to keep gear and filters dry. But a very nice place to spend an hour, and literally right beside the road but you likely won't see another soul in there due to the aforementioned wading required

What a hidden gem! I have gone through Haast Pass twice without noticing in the past. Is The Craypot at Jackson Bay still around? That last road segment is mystical, like reaching the end of the world. Anyway, beautiful images, especially with the illuminated waterfall from above.
