Beautiful image. Both are great but I prefer the as intended version - I like the extra red / gold of the leaves and how it balances against the reflection.
And take (or leave) the following questions as coming from a complete amateur.
I think the part of the "as intended" that makes a difference for me is the inclusion of the tree canopy. On the 16:9 version, that part is cropped out.
Did you do a 16:9 version with the canopy and less of the reflection? It looks like the bottom 1/3rd would be the reflection in a 16:9 - maybe it would have to be a 2:1 to get to a 2/3rd tree and 1/3rd reflection ratio.
