p.2 #1 · Sony A7V "rumor"

Since everybody in the USA pretty much drives a silverish SUV, Chevy has a list of what can be considered luxury that compete directly not only with other GM brands but the best in that category in the world. Clearly a Chevy Impala or Malibu is not luxury, but long ago those were cars as good as any sedans and I routinely see them at car shows now shining like a new diamond.
We will see fairly soon what Sony has up their sleeves. Nikon seems to have delivered with something 'new;.

Do you think the new Nikon Z6III will kind of push Sony to release the Sony A7V more quickly?
In general: when would you expect the Sony A7V to be released?

Nope, production cycles just don't work that way.

Based on past releases for the A7 line, this fall seems like a reasonable guess but anyone who knows isn't allowed to say.

Nikon got the 24MP full frame in the D3x well before Sony released the a850 and a900. Nikon also got the 36MP sensor in the D800 well before the original a7r.

Somebody had to do the beta testing for Sony... it was probably a condition of Nikon being allowed to buy those sensors.

Those were some great betas.

I'd say it's more likely a limited exclusivity arrangement with Sony Semiconductor that kept Sony Imaging from releasing products using those sensors for a specified period of time. Sony has a fine line to walk being both a competitor and a primary supplier.

I don't think there is exclusivity arrangement. If the sensor is designed by Sony, to have exclusivity, Nikon will need to pay more. I don't think most businesses will do that. Unless Nikon knows that Sony or somebody else is going to come up with a competitor with the same sensor at the same time that's going to destroy Z6iii's sales, that's just like paying extra for other side's bluff.

If the sensor is designed by Nikon, then it's a moot point. But "design" in this case just means selecting a combination of technologies from your vendor and putting them together. The vendor itself certainly would have verified already the technologies work together and has the capability to do similar designs itself.

Maybe the sensor is customized to Nikon's spec, but that's about it. Nothing prevents Sony to come up with another similar sensor earlier or later and use it for its own cameras if Sony sees the usefulness.
