p.1 #1 · Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV for Sports Photography
I know the A1 and the Sony A9III are better suited for Sports/Fast Action, but amongst the two mentioned above which would you choose for shooting soccer and motorcross?
p.1 #2 · Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV for Sports Photography
A7RV no question. It has the latest AF technology and really tracks extremely well. The A9III has that same technology . Now FPS maybe low for you but I think it's 10 FPS.
p.1 #3 · Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV for Sports Photography
It's a mixed bag. The AF is better on the surface, but it misses more than I like on moving subjects. The a9iii AF is much better, but all the stacked sensor sony cameras AF better than the non stacked, even with the AI chip on the non-stacked. The FPS are also super limited. You have to use compressed raw and mechanical shutter to get 10fps, which is still pretty low. Using losseless compressed raw you only get 7fps which is too slow to reliably hit the moment you need.
p.1 #4 · Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV for Sports Photography
I think the A7IV and A7RV will be very, very similar. Both 10fps continuous shooting. The A7IV has more AF points, but the A7RV is newer so it likely has a bit more refined AF algorithm. The resolution of the R may let you crop in a bit more and use smaller/shorter lenses. The R also has a higher res EVF. I think the R wins by a hair, but both are good.
For around the same cost used, you could look at the A9ii, which gives up some in resolution but gives you higher frame rates, (likely) better tracking, and blackout free EVF.

Just to be clear as some miss statements here . The A7RV and A9III use the same AF system and actually the new A7CR the A1 and other A9s do not. Maybe different focus point totals but the tracking is the same.

I’ve shot soccer with my old 1dm2n with a 300 f4 lens and got great images. You don’t need the best system in order to produce results. I’d go with the A7r5 and get a nice zoom ( 70-200GM ) and you’ll be all set.
p.1 #13 · Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV for Sports Photography
I've shot plenty of varsity soccer with both a7IV and a7RV, both work fine. Of course you are not going to get the amount of keepers like with a stacked sensor. And you can only shoot with mechanical shutter. The a7RV is much better in that you have more MP to crop from, especially if you don't have really long glass.
If you know the sport and can anticipate moments and position yourself well, you will get very good results over time.
Here is a quick example: a7IV shot at ISO 4000 with poor stadium light conditions. Not a superb photo, but an example that it works fine.
Finally, as Scott mentions, if you are not heavily invested in Sony and don't want to pay Sony a1 or a9III money for a body, a Nikon Z8 would fit the bill very nicely for sport with great glass choices as well.

There are guys here on the BS Forums that sell new A7R V for $2900 all in.
That may be. My point was his potential budget. Most go from the US based MAP / MSRP and never consider buying from a grey market seller with a proper discount and tax free.

Actually reason I asked this question, is there is a A7RV for sale near me for 2900, but I know the R line isn't the fast shooter int he sony line up, so I didn't know if rolling shutter would be bad or if it would be able to handle a fast soccer/car scene

The A7Rv is great at tracking- if you setup the camera right, it’s sticky as can be.
I hated the Sony system though- just never enjoyed it using it- 100% personal taste
I just moved to the z8 and it feels as good- just shot a sporting event with tons of people in and out of frame. Performed just as well.
Both are awesome cameras- Pick the system that intrigues you more-
nice youre in portland too! I am currently on an R5C seems to work well for me, but I don't find myself using video as much as I thought so considering going to something more dedicated for sports photo

Well, I bought the A7R not too long ago. My main gig is street and landscape photography. I want a lot of resolution for prints, and I take my time to frame my photos, so speed is no concern.
That being said, when I try to capture my pet squirrel, 7 or 10 FPS is too slow / not enough. That guy is fast. One moment he sits there with a funny face, a split second later he jumped onto the camera or ran off. Catching the good frames becomes a matter of luck. The A7R V feels like the wrong tool for anything fast. But that's just my 2 cents.
I used the other Sony bodies at expos and as demos, the A9 II or III is the way to go IMO, when you are going to capture events such as motocross and fast sports.
