p.1 #1 · Auto ISO issue with Profoto A1x and Nikon Z cameras
Anyone experiencing issues with their Z cameras and A1x flash heads disabling auto iso? I'm currently experiencing this issue with auto iso activated. Once I attach the A1x flash head the iso would no longer change automatically. It behaves the same on my Z8 and Z6II. I also brought it into a local camera shop and tested on their Z9 and the same issue occurred. We also tried attached a Nikon flash head onto my Z6II and everything worked as it should. Any idea what could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't be too surprised if Nikon makes this work for all their cameras at some point. They've been pretty on the ball about stuff like this. In one firmware update they allowed you to use the the A10's continuous LED as an AF illuminator.
Now, whether or not there is some kind of limitation in the Profoto lights that would prohibit this, I don't know.

When using flash the most consistent results are obtained by using either full manual or shutter priority with a shutter speed of 1/250s. Too many variables with auto ISO and auto exposure control and flash input (especially with a non-Nikon flash).

Auto ISO and flash are definitely not a good combination. You will get mixed results and very little consistency from shot to shot. It’s far better to set an approximate ISO for the environment, switch to manual ISO and shoot in TTL with the AIX. If you’re shooting the same environment, you can use TTL to establish the proper flash level on the initial flash images and then turn from TTL to manual for flash level consistency after that. Once you’re in TTL with a manual ISO, you can brighten or darken the background with shutter speed and vary the DoF using aperture.

My Nikon bodies (D5, Z6, Z8) have a maximum ISO for flash setting in the auto ISO settings menu. Presumably that setting is activated when a flash is detected. Sounds like mounting a flash disables auto ISO and uses the ISO value in that menu as a fixed setting. I think the default is ISO 400.

Agree, TTL plus auto-iso is a bad combo, especially if you're not shooting in a controlled environment. Full manual camera settings is my go to, and then dial in flash compensation depending on the results I'm seeing with TTL (and in some cases just going manual with flash if it's too all over the place).
