p.1 #1 · Point-and Shoot camera for portraits and city photography
Hello
I am looking for a simple point-and-shoot for my 16-year-old, primarily for people photos and the occasional video.
Being a photographer, I would prefer RAW output as an option, but anything around 18-20 MP, 5-7 FPS, built-in viewfinder (preferable), decent low-light performance (think evenings indoors) and high-quality 4K video. I am not looking at mega-zoom capability or taking too many action shorts, so anything in the 16-105 range at f4-f5.6 would be great.
Sony A6400 with 16-50 is the best I could find, but it is expensive. I know Fuji and Leica make great cameras in this market, but are much more expensive.
Used or older model is fine with me, but the problem is I am not able to find one in the $500 range. Any advice on what cameras? I searched the Buy-and-sell forum here on FM as well, with no luck.

If you're willing to look used, the a6300 and 16-50 should be around or below $500. Canon's EOS-M series has some spectacular bargains going right now, but that would be buying your child into a dead system.
If you're willing to look at smaller sensor cameras, the RX100 series has several models that could fit the bill.

I’ve had the Canon G7X filling this role for several years. It has a 1” sensor that is a crop factor of 2.7. It delivers 20MP and the lens is f/1.8 to f/2.8 over 24-100mm equivalent. The closest Sony equivalent is the RX100VA. That has a 24-70 lens instead, but the sensor is a more modern stacked version. To me the slower lens on the latest version with a 24-200 lens is the wrong trade off.
The image quality is not in the same league as 60MP FF with GM glass, but I can put the canon on my belt and bring it with me with no effort. Might be able to find canon for a better price used than the Sony RX100VA. You would want the Mk iii version of the canon to get 4K video.

I wouldn’t call a camera like the A6400 as a point and shoot. You have to set up that camera just like you do an A1. One setting accidentally changed could result in totally ruined photos. How skilled is your daughter shooting these types of cameras?

Regarding the RX100... it can be as old (and hopefully affordable) as a mark 3 model, the RX100 iii, if you don't need the fastest autofocus. The mk3 has the same body, lens and sensor as the mk5. It's a very good lens and sensor. Limited by the sensor size more than anything else. It makes the most of what it can in the form factor. It has an EVF, unlike many small cameras. Though the mk3's EVF is lower-resolution than the mk4 and 5's, it is serviceable.
Depends on what you mean by "portraits". in your intended uses. If it's posed portraits, the autofocus will be enough. If it's portraits of people moving around a lot, probably not and you'd need the mk5.
