Leica M10m Freezing Up Issue

Hoping this is the right place to post this and maybe it's been covered I don't know. My M10 Monochrom occasionally will 'freeze' up and I can't power it off or do anything. I have to remove the battery and then put it back in and it 'restores' the camera to normal. Otherwise it works fine but I'm just concerned it may worsen over time. Is this a known issue ? Will a CLA fix it ? The firmware is current. Any info is appreciated.

I recommend formatting the SD card and if that does not work, try a different one.

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/

Some SD cards do not work well with the Leica M10. Also, contact Leica technical support and describe the issue you're experiencing.
If it's not the SD card, you may need to send the camera in for service.

Ok good info. I'm using Sandisk Extreme Pro 200mb thru 128gb and usually reformat every time I do a photo dump to the laptop. Are there any other service folks who can reliably work on the M digital series cameras ? Leica's repair charges can be prohibitively expensive ? I looked into DAG and YYE but seems they only service the M film cameras.

Echo what Fred said, I had an issue a few years back I talked to Leica SF and they guys there told me M10 series particular about SD cards. They recommended the Hoodman Steel SD cards, the faster the better.

DAG and YYE cannot repair digital M bodies unless the issue is mechanical, such as CLA or rangefinder adjustment. For electronic issues, they lack the necessary tools to service these bodies. Only Leica can handle electronic repairs.

Consider doing a full camera reset as well. Did you try a different card to see if the freezing stops?

not yet, all my other cards are the same. I'll order the ones that thedruid recommended above and then try. it's too bad because those sandisk I have were rated highly in other photography forums but maybe they aren't the one's for Leica M digitals...

I'll perform a reset as well.

Have you formatted the SD cards using the menu item on the camera?

I was hopeful that might be a simple fix for you. For what it's worth I'm currently using a 128GB Lexar® Professional 1667x SDXC™ UHS-II Card SILVER Series with my M10M and haven't had any issues.

Monk, I used to be a dedicated SanDisk customer but their QC has been going down hill for many of their products. For SD cards I now use ProGrade V90 SD cards in my M10-R, M10M, Q2, and SL2 and there have been no lockup problems...ever for me.

I just started running into this issue this weekend with my M10M. The card does seem to be the common thread based on the pattern I've seen with removing battery and/or card to resolve the problem multiple times.

I've been a Sandisk user for years, but this has me thinking I should move on to something else. I would value hearing from more of you in the FM community about which cards are consistently performing well with the M10M and M10R.

(apologies in advance if there's a thread on this and I'm not finding it)

My M10M had the same problem, but I was using a 64 GB Sony Tough card. I switched back to a slower speed SanDisk card and haven't had the problem since.

The Sony Tough cards don't seem to be a good fit for recent Leica M bodies, including the M11 series cameras.

I have had my M10M since it was released and have been using the older SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card - V30 170mb/s with no issues.

This week I switched over to Lexar SDXC UHS-I just to be safe given the insights here. These are the Silver series. My Sandisks were UHS-II.

I am still experiencing freezes when using Live View. This does not happen all of the time and requires removal of the battery. I also tested Live View without a card and got one freeze up. Things seem to be working ok now. In both instances when this happened over the past couple of weeks, it occurred 4-5 times within the first 5 minutes or so of turning the camera on that day then stopped.

Any ideas on other things to check? I was tried to reinstall the latest firmware to ensure it hasn't become corrupted somehow, but I cannot determine a way to do this ("Camera Firmware" is grayed out in the sub-menu).

Thanks much.

If you've confirmed that it's not card it sounds like there's quite possibly an issue with the on-board electronics.

@fred had suggested you do a full factory reset, were you able to try that? That could remediate the issue if there was corruption in the configuration data.

The other thing i could suggest - although it might not get you anywhere - is trying to hone in on where the issue is happening. From your latest post it sounded like it's happening while you're in live view. If that's the case are you able to use the camera reliably *without* activating live view?

UPDATE: one other thing i forgot: Try to DISABLE lens detection and see if there's any change in behavior?

Great points, thank you.

I forgot to mention I did a camera reset earlier today. It did not help.

Everything seems to be fine without Live View. Better said, I've had no freezes with Live View disabled. I had not considered lens detection. Will give this variable a try as well.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

By "Live View" do you actually mean "Auto Review"? If so have you ever had a freeze with "Auto Review" off and then using the Play Button to review images. I never use Auto Review, but a friend of mine tried on his M11 a few firmware versions ago and freezes seemed to happen when the camera was trying to write to the card and display a review at the same time. Not using Auto Reviewed seemed to solve his issue.

Thanks for chiming in. I do not use "Auto Review". I'm referring to use of the Live View function (LV button on the back) where the rear screen essentially becomes an EVF.

I just wanted to be sure. Are you pressing the button while the camera is still writing to the card?
