p.1 #1 · Painted Buntings & more - Austin Texas Edition

Spring in Austin has been quite something this year, post covid, the number of serious hobbists has exploded and that is motiving me to start going out again to capture local birds , something to do between visiting bears

Thank you Morris. It was one of the most exciting mornings I have had in Austin. These buntings were far more tolerant than most I have seen and the flowers were still around.

Wow, what a great set. I live in Austin also, but you obviously are getting out more than me. I had to travel to Junction to get Painted Bunting shots. As others have said the shots in the flowers are lovely!

Thanks Greg. All the bunting shots were from 2 mornings at Common Ford Met Park. I went there sat morning 2 weeks ago and after scouting realized that there was a pair of male buntings hanging around the parking lot and in the flowers. Next morning, spending about 3 hours in the field resulted in almost all of these photos.

Austin now has a very vibrant widlife / birding community. Travis County Birds group on facebook is a good indicator of what is happening around town. Right now, the warblers are mostly gone. Wildflowers in common ford are well past prime, but the buntings are still there last I checked. If you ever want to go out and shoot, holler. I am now gearing up for my summer Alaska trip, but opportunistically will still go out and shoot. Murphy Park in taylor is fairly good right now with egret rookery, but I have not made it there yet.

love Alaska. First visit in 2013 and increasing frequency since then. (Last year ended up there 4 times for the first time, mostly a week or two at time).

Typical Visits: Summer: Katmai Books Falls + Valdez/Wrangel area depending on time ; Fall : Week trip in & out of books falls. This year, I am doing a drop-off / pickup trip to Hallo Bay - pushing my boundaries a bit, but the next logical progression in my Alaska wilderness exploration. I have car for 10 days after that and it's unplanned. Most of where I visit will likely be determined on the fly, but likely I will end up doing Valdez & Wrangel. Sept is brooks again this year with wife and friends and then I may throw in a trip to Haines as well in Nov.

Holler any time you would like to talk. Will DM you my # / email.

That is pretty amazing, as our first and (sadly) only trip to Alaska also was in 2013. We flew into Anchorage, rented a car and traveled all over. The highlights for me, and there were so many, were our time at Denali Nat'l Park, our stay at Silver Salmon Creek Lodge on the shore of Lake Clark Nat'l park to photograph the Coastal Brown Bears, and our trip to Homer to photograph Eagles.
We were considering a return to SSCL this summer, but due to time and financial constraints decided to head to Ouray, Colorado in June.
Here's a link to my Alaska Trip Gallery, if you get time to look at it -- it's pretty extensive:
