Some photos taken on a visit to Norfolk and a trip on the Broads.
1. A WHERRY:
This is a type of light river boat or a traditional cargo-carrying sailing barge, most famously associated with the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.
2. The Wherry from the stern.
The Norfolk wherry is one of Britain's most distinctive traditional sailing craft. Built specifically for the shallow rivers and broads of Norfolk and Suffolk. The familiar large black sail was not simply dramatic to look at. It was practical too. Traditionally treated with a mixture of tar, fish oil and ochre to help preserve the fabric, the sail became almost waterproof and developed the rich dark colour that remains instantly recognisable today. Only a handful of traditional wherries survive today.
3. St. Benets Abbey.
This was a medieval monastery of the Order of Saint Benedict situated at Cow Holm in Horning, Norfolk, England. It lay on the River Bure within the Broads. In the second half of the 18th century, a farmer built a windmill, later converted to a windpump, inside the abbey gatehouse. The remains can be seen in the photograph.

"Shrooms..."
This year it has been so hot and humid that when we do get some rain..the wild mushrooms abound!
I have lived here 23 years..NEVER have I seen these mushrooms pop, in this type of shape, up despite similar, different weather in the Summer. These mushroom heads are HUGE! The do NOT have a smooth "cap". There are "nooks -n-carnnies- at the very top. I kept the tone more mid to give a sense of depth to those "islands".
