p.1 #1 · How badly do Duracell alkaline batteries suck?

I've had their button cells leak and swell in the package.

Now these AAs which they claim are good for 10 years! Use by date 2029..

Stored in a drawer in my office.

I've talked to enough camera repair technicians to know to avoid Duracells. At least it was still in the package when it leaked and didn't damage anything.

I had exactly the same experience. Pretty sure I took photos too, but I didn't find them in a quick search, just now. I had probably three dozen Duracell AAs, same as yours. About 20% were corroded, like yours. I even wrote down the totals, but I'll probably never find that. I think I did my Duracell purge late last year.

I am kinda surprised you don't have a five gallon bucket of Costco AA's with as many cameras as you own.

p.1 #5 · How badly do Duracell alkaline batteries suck?

Every single effing Duracell I've had in the last fifteen years has leaked on me including multiple unopened brand new sealed packages. They are the worst and when I recently bought a Black Diamond headlamp at REI that came with Duracells from the factory, the first thing I did was toss the batteries and put Eveready's in. Duracell's have ruined several pieces of electronic gear and I simply will not use them ever again. And don't forget that the Costco house brand is made by Duracell and suffer the same. Absolute crap.

I didn't know that Costco's batteries were made by Duracell. Thanks for the information!

yeah these were bought from Costco so back they go today! and that is the great thing about Costco - no issue returning these even though i don't have the receipt.

So Eveready is the go to? Any other brand suggestion in case I don't find those?

I have been using Energizers for several years and haven’t had a problem. I haven’t tried them but the Amazon house brand is reported to being good.

Panasonic seem really good, I bought more or less store brand (Simply Done?) at the grocery store the other day $1.69. Probably good.

I'd really recommend energizer rechargeable, though

Alkalines are known for leaking

Good to know. I bought a bunch of AA and AAA batteries when we moved to Washington since power outages are a thing here. I checked my battery drawer and the only bad one I found was an Energizer AAA so I tossed it in the battery recycle box and will keep an eye on the Duracell and Kirkland batteries.

Thanks for the heads up!

I experienced the Duracell leaking in the package over five years ago. I have also lost remote controls, flashlights, and radios due to total corrosion of the battery terminals from Duracells. At first, I thought it was negligence on my part, but I had other brands that we installed much earlier that were fine. The Duracell's are just plain garbage! I also had them totally rotted in the package with years on the expiration date.
At that time, I got rid of them all and vow to never buy Duracell again. I switched most of my equipment to Panasonic Enelloop rechargeables which I found outstanding. Ikea also has some rechargeables that were adequate, but make sure to get the higher capacity ones . For the equipment that I need to use disposable batteries, I usually purchase energizer lithium. They are more expensive, but they work very well and cold and freezing situations.

Thank you for bringing this to the forefront. Personally, I don't care if Duracell does an about face and makes better batteries, because I will not support them ever again, nor the Costco Kirkland brand batteries.

p.1 #13 · How badly do Duracell alkaline batteries suck?

All alkaline batteries suck. All of them eventually leak. None of them are trustworthy. I've had as many Energizers or Brand X batteries fail as Duracells, leaking and destroying equipment.

Most recently, I've had a Maglite and an N8008 destroyed by alkaline Energizers. I honestly don't think there's a difference from one brand to the next. I think the problem is that the alkaline battery chemistry just isn't stable over very long periods of storage. The best solution is to just stop using alkaline batteries and change over to NiMH rechargeables if your device can function on the lower voltage.

If you have no choice but to run alkalines, it's best to remove them from your device when it's not in use. I know, it's not very convenient to do that, but it beats replacing damaged gear.

For NiMH I've used mostly Energizers and Eneloops. I've been through several generations of Energizers, none of which seem to meet their rated lifespan. I think the Eneloops are better. Right now I'm giving the Amazon Basics a try just because they're cheap. I'd love to hear others' opinions about them.

I must be lucky. I've had maybe two defective Duracells. I have had Energizer, Everready, Rayovac, and Interstate all leak on me.
90% of my AA and AAA batteries are eneloops. They just work and I never had one leak on me. I suspect the battery leaks are more a consequence of the chemistry than the brand.

I haven't heard of lithiums leaking, and I never had issues with Lithium Duracells. I think it is the alkaline chemistry that is the issue. So basically avoid alkaline batteries.

On a different kind of non -photo device, it didn't seem to cause much surprise if alkalines leaked. Ideally leaving alkalines in there probably isn't a good idea, of course I said ideally so it'd probably happen

I've heard to use the heavy duty non-alkaline in smoke detectors because they apparently last longer on the shelf. So those might be good if they don't leak, especially if you aren't using a flash.

Panasonic C batteries seemed to last longer in a game camera than Duracell and cost less, so I started buying them more after that. Could probably just put the batteries in the camera before use, or maybe leave them in the one you're using a lot for months not years. Grocery store brand seems OK but I avoid dollar store, usually use rechargeable AA's though

Just threw out a bunch of new AA's. in package . Not expired. I don't use them anymore. Energizers are better quality.

Lithium leaks are very rare

Alkaline batteries suck. Use NiMH. There's no reason not to use envelopes in photo gear. Better motor driver performance, faster flash recycling.
