p.1 #1 · 3rd party ultra wide angle lenses for Nikon Z

I am considering buying a used ultra wide angle lens for use on my Z7 or Z6ii. I currently have a Nikon Z 24-70 as well as a Z mount 24-200. I have an FTZ adapter. I would be using it for landscape photography and perhaps some street photography. I am thinking that something like a 14-24mm would suit me. However, the Nikon Z mount is too expensive for me. My budget would be about $500.00 Looking forward to hearing about any suggestion.

You don't mention what aperture you need, but if you are going to use the FTZ anyway, you can get either the Nikon 16-35/4 VR or the Nikon 18-35G (newest version) within your budget.

If you want wider than 16mm, you might have the stretch the budget just a little bit. Sigma's 14-24/2.8 ART can be had around $600 USD on the used market. Nikon's own 14-24/2.8 (F mount) can also be found around $650-700 USD on the used market. Tamron doesn't have anything that wide.

Since I would be using it mainly for landscapes, I would be using an aperture of f/8 or smaller.

Provided that filters are used frequently, be it CPL, ND, Natural Night, IR or other filters, this should be taken into account in the proposed solutions.
This ranges from 77mm filter diameters for the slower zooms, to the option of slide-in rear filters for the Sigma afaik, to the need for filter holders for the Nikon F 14-24.
So there are significant differences in cost if you need a complete set of new filters, especially as the existing lenses work with smaller diameters.

Take a look at a used Z 17-28mm (maybe a little over your budget) or adapting the Sony FE version (definitely within your budget). It’s a fantastic wide angle zoom, small, lightweight, and well behaved.

There are plenty of F-mount ultra wide zooms, but generally they are huge (except the 18-35mm G) but many are available at reasonable prices. Just watch out for incompatibility with the FTZ…

The Sigma 14-24mm Art is phenomenal if you don’t mind the size and weight!

If that's the case then you just need to decide how wide you want and to what extent you care about filter compatibility, size/weight, etc.

Nikon 18-35G --> In your budget and accepts screw on filters

Nikon 16-35/4 VR --> In your budget and accepts screw on filters.

Sigma 14-24/2.8 ART --> Slightly above your budget and and a third party rig is required for filters (not cheap). Also bulbous front element and big/heavy design.

Nikon 14-24/2.8 (F mount) --> $150-200 above your budget and a third party rig is required for filters. Again, bulbous front element and big/heavy design.

There have been a few Z 14-30/4 lenses sell for $7XX but most are $800+. If you are patient and can find a good deal on one of those used, you get 14mm, standard filter compatibility, equal if not better image quality to the F mount 14-24 variants, and the most compact design. If you could squeeze into one of those, that would definitely be the best option especially since you don't need F2.8, but if you are really trying to stay close to $500 then it's not going to work. It's one of those cases though where you spend a little bit more and get a lot more, so it's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not.

Am I the only one who does not think of anything 18-xx as UWA? To me UWA implies 14-16mm on the wide end.

I am assuming that UWA means zoom. Within a $500 budget on FF your options are limited. You have no options in terms of native lenses, new or used. The best bet is likely 16-35 FTZ. This was a weird lens for Nikon. A bit too large and heavy for what it is, and image quality supposedly somewhat lower than a typical "gold ring" lens. I have owned it and could never see a meaningful difference from the 14-24, but perhaps I am not discerning enough.

Another option on the used market would be a 14-24 AFS. Was the UWA standard in the pre mirrorless era. Canon users bought it to run with adapters. Big bulbous front element and big expensive filters on big expensive holders required.

I can't think of any third party lenses that would compete with the above two, especially given the decimation in the prices of used F lenses
