I'd like to see some examples of the Nikon 28mm 1.4E used on a film camera. Does anyone have any examples they can throw up for me to look at? Especially at 1.4. I'm toying with the idea of buying one to use on both film and digital.
You probably already knew that the Nikon 28/1.4E can only be use at f/1.4 on the Nikon film bodies including F100 and F5/6. With the latest E version of these lenses, aperture can not be changed.
I have this lens but only used on digital bodies. On digital, for my own user experience, this is one of the best 28mm lenses.
The older Nikon 28/1.4 AF-D is also a very nice consideration for film and digital. But I am sorry that I don't have any film images to show here.
Yeah it's a bummer - there are no film cameras that can correctly operate e-aperture lenses.
The only Sigma Arts that work are the 35 and 50. And zero Nikon /Es.
The upcoming F7 will have e-aperture compatibility, as well as the AF system and batteries from the D780 and of course a modernized menu system. Nikon will also bring back a few knobs a la ZF - so physically it will have a touch of F4 to it.

I have the 28/1.4 AF-D and it's a nice lens although the manual focus experience is predictably not that great. I'm interested in getting a Nikon film camera that I can use with it, one that can drive the autofocus, but whenever I try to figure out which cameras are compatible I get lost. The other Nikon-mount cameras I have are all manual-focus (Nikon 85/1.4 Ai-S and Zeiss 35/1.4 ZF.2) and I'd like to be able to use those too. I had a few recommendations in the "Which Nikon Film Camera" thread but that was before I got this lens and was interested in trying it in autofocus mode. Any suggestions?

The Nikon N80/F80. I like them so much I have two - and use them more than my F6!
Will work perfectly with that lens. There was one on the B&S recently but now snagged.
The thing to watch out for is the sticky rubber - easily cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and 10 mins of elbow grease. And the plastic latch on the back door being broken. Nikon in its wisdom replaced metal w plastic for this piece in all the non single digit F cameras of this era (F100, F80, F75 etc).
The trick to keep it from breaking is to not snap the back shut, but hold up the release catch as you close the film back, then release it. Pretty incredible that Nikon would replace metal with plastic - I guess saving that nickel per camera really paid off...
(even the freakin Nikon EM has a metal latch!)
But I digress - Nikon N80/F80 would be great w it. It also has one killer feature - LCD grid lines on the focus screen that can be turned on or off! My F6 can't do that.

I had a Df and a D2x both which were capable of metering with the Ai-S lenses. Now that there is a metal latch kit to replace the plastic door latch on the F100, that would offer the flexibility you're looking for.

I think the same person makes one for the F80 as well?

Will work perfectly with that lens. .
Thanks! I'm definitely aware of that camera but wasn't sure if it would also work with my older Ai-S lens and my 35/1.4 ZF.2 (which was designed for digital but can be used on film cameras of course)? And I forgot that I also have the old Tokina 28-70 ATX-Pro 2.6-2.8 (Angénieux design) in Nikon mount, which does have autofocus although I've never used it in that mode, only manual.
I think it was the metering that was the issue with the N80 and those older lenses, but I can always meter manually.

I am currently using a Nikon F100 as autofocus SLR along with two F3s for manual focus lenses. I also used a F6 years ago and I wish it didn't trade it. Your Nikon 28/1.4 AF-D should work well with F100 and I don't find focus accuracy is a concern on F100 when shooting wide open. I usually use this lens with F/1.8 or F/2 for a bit better image quality and rendering characters, particularly for its color renderings. Your Nikon 85/1.4 Ai-S and Zeiss 35/1.4 ZF.2 will work with F100, too. I find the "green arrow/dot" focus indicator in F100 is sufficiently accurate, at least for more stationary objects. One thing to keep in mind is that when using your Nikon Ai-S lens, only the center-weigh metering works on F100. Your Zeiss 35/1.4 ZF.2 is chipped and the "Matrix" metering will work on F100.
I really enjoy your concerts/dancing images - they are excellent!

Thanks! This sounds promising for the F100. And thanks for the comments on my concert/dance photos, I love doing those although the venues are usually too dark for film (I'm often well above ISO 12,800 although occasionally as low as 1600 or 3200). But I've been asked to shoot photos at a dance event this summer that will have dances during the day (natural light through the windows) as well as night dances and I'd like to try shooting film for the daytime dances and workshops; autofocus would be handy especially for film since I have a pretty low success rate when I'm taking photos of dancers with manual-focus lenses.

People love to bash this guy, but his web page is very handy for people with questions like yours:
I'll make the same recommendation as in your other thread: F100, N90S, F80.
VR works on the 80 but not on the 90s, but 90s gives you CW/Spot metering that you don't get with the 80. 100 gives you both CW/Spot metering and VR. None of the older screw drive AF mid-price cameras are worth having.
