p.1 #1 · Dual Back-Button Focus on A7 Series Question.
Random question that I can't seem to find anywhere online. Was wondering if anyone can verify this ideal setup on the A7 series of cameras (particularly the A7R5.)
I just came from the Canon R5 that I was able to assign two back buttons for focus - first AF-On button was assigned for a spot focus point in AF-S mode and the second button was assigned to a Wide eye-tracking in AF-C mode. Can anyone confirm if that is an option on the A7 series camera?
I thought I'd get away from the SLR setup and go to the Nikon ZF to size down my kit, but quickly realize the ZF doesn't have the ability to have a two-button focus setup with one in AF-C and the other in AF-S so this seems like a great time to get back to the Sony lineup again.

Thanks for the reply, Mogul, I appreciate it! I’ll move forward with a Sony then, I’m excited to get back to the lineup. Sorry to hear about your button fiasco, frustrating to hear that happen!

I have a7r5 and Canon r6ii. I configured both to do triple button back focus. The joystick button is regular af. The af on is subject detect af on Sony and wide area subject detect on Canon which focus on detected subject on the entire frame even if u are on a spot af mode. The last button is standard af with -1.7ev in case I need a quick exposure adjustment.

Triple back button focus! I like how you think. Just to clarify on the Sony, would the regular af be AF-S and the remainder two be AF-C? The Nikon ZF will let me setup dual or even triple focus buttons, but will only let me set AF-S or AF-C for all buttons so I just wanted to make sure that wouldn’t be a limitation moving over to Sony next.

I use the AF-ON button for single exposure, focus-on. I use the AEL button for high speed multi- exposure, wide area, tracking on. I use the latter for BIF. Assigning a custom-hold function to a button gives you a lot of flexibility.

The terminology will no doubt be different from Canon. When you go to assign the custom button you will get the most flexibility by choosing Recall Custom Hold (1, 2 or 3). You'll be able to choose from several settings that will be applied while the button is pressed down.
