p.1 #1 · M 262 vs 240 (vs m10??) shutter

Hi all,

I know in a post m10 era these cameras are hard to justify… but there’s still something appealing about them. I had an m10, then an m10-p + FLE and honestly it was just a bit too much $$ to sling around as an EDC, I’m not a professional photographer (moving pictures is another story..). I had concerns about going back to the older thicker body profile but after a visit to Samy’s in LA today and handling an M 240 I was pleasantly surprised how good it felt in the hand, even coming from the m10-p.

Anyways, I’m curious if anyone out there has had a 262 and a 240 together at some point and can comment on the difference in shutter.. I’ve heard anecdotally that the 262 is quieter. While I could get onboard with the benefits of LV, I think if the 262 was noticeably quieter that might tip the scales it it’s favor..

Cheers and thanks in advance!

I had an M 262. Great camera. I prefer it over the M 240. I didn't want video and the M 262 is lighter than the M 240. And I do believe the 262 does have a quieter shutter. The 262 was less expensive originally that the 240 but seems to sell for more now used than the used 240.

I never had an issue w the sound of the M240 shutter. Even now owning an M10r.

Don’t discount the value of LV - it is great for checking focus/dialing in focus of the rangefinder.

Thanks - I hear ya. Especially when considering the newer, closer-focusing VM and Leica lenses…. ‘course the other side of me wants to go full M-D and just forget the screen altogether ;-)

p.1 #5 · M 262 vs 240 (vs m10??) shutter

I own a M262 and had a 240 for about a year. I prefer the 262 but there isnt a ton in it. The 262 just feels simpler and sorted out. My thought in a list of priorities:

1) I never used live view as much I would have thought. It's laggy to engage. Despite being a fan of old optics and the M sensor being ideal for this I never shot anything worth writing home about. Even with ultra-wides I found myself just using a shoe mount VF instead of the screen.

2) the back screen on the 240MP and 262 are basically about as bad at color/contrast rendition as the 240 but the 240 makes everything icy cool whereas the 262/240MP make everything toasty warm which I prefer. Neither is satisfying to chimp on like a mirrorless, especially a Fuji.

3) The weight savings. The 262 feels weighty and solid. The 240 feels like a lead anchor. Also prefer the semi-gloss of the 262 over the sheen of the 240.

4) The shutter is a little quieter/refined in the 262 but there is very very very little in it. Neither sounds like a shotgun bucking against your eye like the M8 did.

5) The buffer feels adequate in the 262 (probably the 240MP too). As in I just don't notice it. I would hit the limit on the 240 once and a while. Not in C mode but just hammering the shutter to get a moment.

I love the files out of both. I find them organic and colorful and I enjoy grading them in my iPad.
