I want to replace my second and backup camera, the old A7 Mark 1 with with a new camera. (First Camera is A7R3). After 9 years of usage of the A7 and more than 50.000 exposures, the rubber coating is peeling off and I get frequently some shutter errors.
I use the old A7, for bike tours, lightweight work, travel and as second body for wedding. The sluggish performance, lack of image stabilisation and the slow AF are really annoying me.
First choice for replacement would be a A7CR or A7CII. (I prefer A7RC). Both cams are better in every regard than A7I, except the lack of a full mechanical shutter. This could really be a dealbreaker for me, as I use some fast 1.2 and 1.4 lenses. So for fast shutter speeds I need the eletronical shutter, which is quite slow. The A7CR has a sensor readout time of (1/20) (compressed raw, electronic shutter). The A7cII has same readout time (1/30) like my A7R3.
So how is the difference between (1/30) and (1/20) sensor readout time? Will it be noticeable in the field? Do you have any experience or comparisons? Perhaps somebody of you owned A7rIII/A74 and switched it to A7cR with the slower sensor?
Does somebody of you has the same experience and use A7CII/R with fast lenses? Or do you think A7CII/R is the wrong camera for fast lenses?
I've seen several "discussions" of this on forums. I don't have an A7Cii or A7CR to try but because some of the discussions point to rather different conclusions, maybe you could rent one or the other and try it in test situations that match your expected uses to see how it goes?
quite frankly, all of those are variations of poor, even 1/60 is not good, it's one of these things that goes bad to good in one stop sadly.
1/60 and below = banding.
1/120 and above = no banding.
use an ND filter to lower your shutter speed. Most f1.4/1.2 lenses are large, why not simply go to a body with full mechanical shutter? With the 50 f1.2, you're at 1400g or so with a full body, or 1250g with a "C" style body... If you're using small lenses, that 150g can mean a much larger percentage with lens factored in.
I don’t find it to be an issue unless the subject is moving even on the A7CR. If you’re just shooting people, portraits, landscapes then it should work fine in electronic shutter which is how I mainly use it. I will switch over to mechanical shutter if there will be any movement or action involved.
