p.1 #1 · SIGMA 500MM F4.5 EX DG APO HSM

Is this lens worth buying these days for use on a Nikon Z7 or Z50? Can anyone tell me when this lens came out? I have found one for sale in "excellent" condition for $1,100 which seems to be a good value.

Comments or observations would be welcomed.

It’s an older generation. IMHO you would be better off with a Nikon 200-500 for less money, or a Nikon 500PF for more. Both are excellent. Both are lighter.

I currently have a Sigma 150-600, but I would like to get a faster lens than the 200-500. The Nikon 500PF at $2,000 used is too expensive for my budget.

Hi Graham,

I still own (though rarely use) my EF-mount Sigma APO 500mm F4.5 EX DG HSM and, for its day, it was a more-affordable alternative to Canon's own f/4 offering (and, I assume, whatever Nikon had to offer back then, as well). I can't speak to any personal comparison between the two, but for me it provided excellent results as this Flickr gallery (with 4.5K images) will attest to its performance (though, be careful to check for images with the actual Exif data posted as certain posters there have erroneously posted images with their f/4 version)...

Their HSM motors were spry and accurate and quiet (but not as nice as today's HLA AF motors from Sigma) and the lens adapted well both to Sony E-mount and less-reliably-so with my current L-mount. Again, I can't speak for performance with Nikon bodies.

Shutterbug reports a release date of April 25, 2005 and there are user reviews at Imaging-Resource dating back that far, if that's important to you...

And here's a representative review of this lens, as well...

As for the specs, up until this past year both Sigma USA and Sigma Global still posted full spec sheets for their discontinued lenses with MTF charts and Lens Diagrams, however I've noticed that the U.S. pages have disappeared and the Global pages have been greatly simplified with a lot of information omitted on their older lenses...unfortunately. However, being the digital packrat that I am I did screenshot this lens' former spec page...

Anyhoo, I hope this was helpful!

Thanks Jimmy, that is very helpful. I have sent an email to Sigma-USA to see what support they still offer for this lens.

Glad to be of help, Graham! The folks at Sigma's Ronkonkoma, NY facility are top-notch, I've been out there on several occasions and they've gotten me sorted out professionally every time, great bunch of folks!

Be aware that any service on this older lens might require them having to send it off to Japan, as was the case with my most-recent check-up for my Sigma 300-800mm EX DG HSM, so your "final costs" for this lens may go up a bit over that $1100 price.

By comparison, I purchased mine a few years back when the kind folks at LensAuthority were unloading their copies and I snagged a minty-fresh one (apparently, not many folks had actually rented it!) for $1800, which I thought quite the bargain at the time as the lens had gone through their testing before being offered up for sale.

If you check my sig you'll see I've been a big fan of Sigma glass for quite a while and this lens is on my "tops list" of lenses for IQ that they produced back in those days (others being the 120-300mm f/2.8, all variants, 105mm and 150mm f/2.8 EX DG Macros, 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG HSM, and 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG, to name a few).

As for how this lens will perform AF wise on the Nikon bodies you mentioned, hopefully someone will be along shortly to help you with that answer! Best of luck with your decision, keep us posted!

Be careful with the DG DN lenses, as I do not think they can autofocus with the FTZ/Z-body combination. Unlike the ART lenses, you have to send the lenses in for firmware changes.

Hi OwlEyes,

I'm thinking you meant to say "EX DG" lenses? The DN lenses are Sigma's current line for the mirrorless L-mount and E-mount.

In regards to those considering the older EX DG lenses the, er, demarcation-line I would recommend keeping an eye out for is whether the lens variant came with the HSM (Hypersonic) focusing motors designation or whether it predates that...the older non-HSM variants will likely incorporate some version of their noisy and cranky and slower and less-precise stepper motors. That's not to say that one should necessarily expect success with adapting an HSM lens on any new mount, but rather, if the lens actually AF's when adapted that, at least, it's performance likely/possibly won't be insufferable (subjective, I know).

I think I get where our OP is coming from in desiring a faster telephoto while trying to economize by looking at older glass (been there myself), but I would caution that one should make sure they can get a stipulation with their purchase that if the lens does not actually work with the buyer's adapted setup that they would be able to return the lens for a refund. Or, better yet, if the seller is local, try it out in person to make sure that setup works before finalizing any purchase decision.

However, if it turns out that the adapted 500 4.5 F-mount plays nice with the OP's Z7 and Z50, bravo! I'm sure others will be trying to hunt one down for themselves, too! Either way, I hope the OP keeps us informed...curious minds want to know!

Yes... you are right, EX DG is the designation I was thinking.
I owned various varieties of the 120-300 f2.8 from HSM to ART and remember trying to find a 500mm f4.5 to get longer without converters. At the time I was ready to make the jump, I was a using an F-Mount Nikon D500. I had the 120-300 f2.8 ART and thought the EX DG 500 would be perfect. Unfortunately, it turned out that the lens would not AF with a D500. Fortunately, I was able to demo it at a store and did not have to buy and return. It is for this reason that I wanted to caution the OP.

cheers,
bruce

I heard back from Sigma, and they told me that they are no longer servicing this lens or doing firmware updates.

2025 Thread Resurrection

Well, it turns out that I'm the one that's testing this out!

I've been field-testing my EF-mount Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG HSM on both my Z6 III and Z50 II via a Fringer EF-NZ II (both v1.08 and v1.10 v1.8 and v2.0 FW) and I am more-than-pleased with its AF performance and the results I am getting, especially for BIF.

I've owned this lens for a number of years and it's sat mostly unused due to the, um, less-than-stellar AF performance I had gotten with it using it natively on my Canon 5D Mark II and 7D. When moving to Sony a6300, a7R and a7S II and utilizing Sigma's own EF-to-E-mount MC-11 adapter I, again, encountered less-than-stellar AF performance and, again, the lens sat under-used. Then came my foray into Panasonicland and L-mount with my Lumix S1's and MFT-mount with my GH6...again using Sigma's MC-21 EF-to-L-mount adapter and Metabone's EF-to-MFT adapter and speedboosters (repectively) the AF performance was again lackluster and I had concluded (it turns out, erroneously) that perhaps the Sigma 500's HSM motors just weren't up-to-the-task of providing swift and accurate and continuous AF-C.

My hopes were not high when I decided to, once again, purchase a mount adapter for my new Z6 III and Z50 II and check out the usability of my extensive array of EF-mount lenses (I wouldn't say I'm a hoarder, but I pretty much still own every piece of camera equipment I've purchased over the past half-century! c. pre-1974 Konica SLR anyone?! ).

And then came the surprise...using [Auto-area AF] on the shutter button and [Pinpoint AF] on the Fn1 button and AF-C [Coninuous AF] with [Auto] Subject Detection set on both cameras this lens came-to-life like I've never experienced it before. Now, I've yet to experience any native Z-mount telephoto primes and how they AF-C, but both of these cameras put subject boxes and eye-detect boxes (if the subject is close enough to do so) on birds, both stationary and in-flight with this Sigma prime! The continual AF was both swift and sticky and accurate with both bodies in my testing, so far! Very impressive, indeed, is an understatement, especially in comparison to the performance with those aforementioned camera bodies from Canon, Sony and Panasonic vs how these 2 Nikon bodies are commanding this lens!

I don't know what "magic juju" that Nikon has going-on with their AF system, but this old c.2005 Sigma EF lens has gotten a new lease on life! It turns out there never was any AF problem with this lens (as I'd thought all these years), it was just patiently waiting for the proper suitor to come along to get it to dance and kick up its heels! Haw! I am a very happy camper from this unexpected surprise!

One caveat: using the focus limiter on the lens does cause some erratic, um, non-compliance with AF so I just leave it set to the full range.

Okay, second caveat: the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 weighs in at 3,150g (6.945 Lb), so it's not for the faint-of-heart for hand-holding.

The proof is in the pudding...the following are handheld, cropped SOOC JPGs with my normal minor exposure adjustments and tweaks in MacOS Preview App and resized for 1500x1000 (my typical size for posting to eBird)...

Used that lens for a few years on Pentax. Light and nimble, AF, image quality take a hit.
