What exactly are the issues with the Sony 20mm f1.8 and other 20mm lenses? Is it vignetting or something else?

I use the Megadap ETZ pro on a Z8. I have been happy with the combination. I have not had any fitment issues.
Megadap also seams to be doing a good job at updating the firmware as compatibility issues are found.
I have not tried any of the other ETZ adapters, since I am not sure if any others will fit my needs. For example I have read the Techart PRO does not work with manual focus lenses or teleconverters.
Side note if your planing to pickup the Sony 24MM just to mount on the ZF I would try to find someone that has adapted that lens on to Nikon or rent one first and try it yourself. Recently we learned that the Sony 20mm F1.8 G does not adapt well to Nikon Z cameras (at least with the Megadap adapter). The current thinking is some E lenses around 20mm might not adapt well to Nikon Z. ...Show more →

See the pictures I posted on the bottom of page one on this thread. 20G is great on a Sony body. It is fine stopped down on Nikon via adapter, it has smudgy bad corners wide open on Nikon via adapter.

I have the Megadap. I ran some test with various lens and it does work suprisingly well. I managed to track someone walking with the Sigma 85mm 1.4 dg dn and 8/10 burst are perfectly sharp and the 2 other still usable.
I did had some focus issue with the 55mm 1.8 and for video I would not recommend as it is wobly.
If you shoot jpeg I would avoid wide angle as modern Sony lens distort like crazy without the in camera correction.
otherwise in LR you can easily find the profile to correct any flaw.
Keep in mind that Z mount lens are really amazing and even the 1.8 perform like 1.4 of other brands while being cheaper and sometimes even smaller. So sometimes it's not really worth it.
I pretty much only recommend lens mount adapters (Not counting brand specific adapters such as the FTZ, which are usually basically perfect) to people if 1) your a duel system user or 2) there is a lens you want that exist for another mount and there is no close alternative for your camera mount.
I fall almost entirely in group 1 as a Nikon and Sony user so lens adapters when they work make being a duel system user much more practical. Besides for helping cut down cost of buying two similar lenses in two diffrent mounts, at the end of the day there is only so much gear you can take with you.
Technicaly I started in group 2, as I started adapting lenses with a Canon 17mm TS to a Sony a7rII which at the time was the widest TS lens available. But that's been the only lens I have bought that I don't have a native camera for.
Do you think other 20mm lens would be same?
Like Voigtlander 21mm Color Skopar VM?
Well its bad enough that I would never use it below f5.6 unless I planned to crop to a 28mm FOV. I have no idea how VM lenses would perform, but I wouldn't use a Megadap FE to Z as the converter for a VM lens.

The down side to this approach is it kind of leaves people who want compact primes or cheeper primes hanging. It would be nice to see Sigma bring there I series to Nikon Z. I feel they would fit the hole of cheeper and more compact primes nicely. They also look really nice too.
I have the Megadap coming today mostly to be able to use the Sigma I series lens. I used them on L mount and liked them and think they would be a good "fit" on my Zf. I have the 65mm I series coming tomorrow on a rental to see how I like it. I really wish Nikon would let Sigma start bringing over their FF lens.

Do you have any wide Sigma? Like 20mm or 24mm? I would like to see how do those work with Megadap, distortion wise.
On Sony body those are corrected in body.

The Sigma 65mm will be my first e-mount lens. I expect if all goes well with the 65, I'll try the Sigma 17mm f/4 and 24mm f/2. Maybe the 20mm f/2. Reviews on the 20mm seem to show it vignettes more than the other two. I expect others will have checked it out with the etz before I get around to it. I like having a wide lens, but shoot longer ones more.

I'm not worried about vignetting, distortion on wide Sigma is bigger issue.
I keep asking but cannot find anyone who would test 20mm or 24mm on that adapter, so if you could do it, I would appreciate it. I need a nice wide lens on Zf, either Sigma or Batis 25mm is on my list.
I got the Sigma I series 65mm f/2 rental to be my first test of the Megadapt etz pro. The lens data supplied to Lightroom CC shows the lens model correctly but the says the lens is made by Nikon. I have to manually select Sigma and reselect the model to get the right profile. The profile has options for L or Sony E mount once sigma is selected. I'm not sure the profile is much different than the camera suppled one as I'm not taking pics of a test chart or something. I did see a slight difference between L and Sony versions, but not sure which is actually better for real world use. I assume I should pick Sony since that is the mount the lens was built for.
I initially Bought my Nikon ZF with Sigma 50mm f2 with megadap adapter. I was really happy with the performance until I noticed that the battery was draining at a very fast rate...even when the camera was turned off. After some research I realized that the issue was with the adapter. Unfortunately I had to return the lens and the adapter, and got the 40mm SE for now. Does anyone of you encounter this issue?
Checking in here at the beginning of 2025… Is Megadap still the best all around adapter? Any comments on excessive battery drain?
I’m thinking about using one of these on my Nikon ZF in order to use either the Zeiss 35 1.4 or the Sony GM 35 1.4. Both of those lenses appeal to me in a way that the Nikon offering don’t.
My megadap adapter became loose and af is unreliable now.
I bought the new Viltrox adapter last week. Af speed seems slightly slow but everything is fine. Lens model is incorrect in exif but focal length is right

When you say "loose" do you mean didn't make a firm connection with the mount? I've had that experience and it's super disconcerting.

I haven't had any issues with the megadap. I've used it on the z8 and zf with the 35 1.4 GM and it worked great. Almost native like.
For those using the Megadap and finding it coming loose or not making a good connection, are you using large heavy lenses or small light lenses?
Thanks
Here is a link to another thread on adapters. The Viltrox may be considered best by some depending on application. I linked to page 3 as that is where people started to receive and test units
