Well last week I cancelled my pre-orders of the 24-50/2.8 G and 16-25/2.8 G from B&H because I was going to end up being away for a few weeks and it’s hard to arrange FedEx to hold it for that length of time.

Fast forward to today and my travel plans were cancelled so I ordered just the 24-50/2.8 G and it will arrive Wednesday the 15th. I decided to wait on the 16-25/2.8 because I still have the Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN C which is internal focusing so at 25mm it’s as short as the Sony and only 10 grams heavier than the 24-50/2.8 G (not as light as the 16-25) and honestly not getting used much. So I will hold off for now and hear how everyone likes the new 16-25/2.8 G.

Still want to hear more about everyone’s experience with the new 24-50/2.8 G. Keep sharing and take care.

PS. I still have the FE 12-24/4 G that I really never use if someone is interested in it. Like new and I have great feedback here on FM B& S.

Anyone experiencing focus pulsing on the 24-50?

AF-C, Spot S, A7CR

I switched to AF-S and it seemed to go away, switched back and it returned. Then changed from small to medium spot and it went away again. It wasn't happening on all scenes but it was on the one below with a ton of contrast, so should have been easy to focus (this is the good shot, the one I got when it was pulsing was totally OOF)

I wonder if it's related to the many vertical edges in the frame? AF seems to prioritize them. With so many, maybe it gets overwhelmed.

I didn't notice any of that during my two weeks with the lens. I'll keep an eye out for it when my copy arrives.

Thanks Mike. I first noticed it on the scene with the osprey which was my 1st stop. I though it was due to low light so I didn't change anything. Never had this issue with other lenses or bodies but I'm far from an AF expert. I'll try it on an A7R5 and an A1 with the same settings when I get a chance. If it's just a feature of this lens I'm sure I can live with a medium spot, but if no-one else has the problem with the same combo/setting I'd prefer to get it switched out. Other than this I'm very happy with the lens.

Just an FYI. My reordered Sony FE 24-50/2.8 G just arrived from B&H this afternoon. A day earlier than promised and only a two day delay from when my preorder was to arrive after canceling it last week. Just for fun I will do some comparisons of it to the Sigma 28-70/2.8 at 28, 35, 40 and 50mm.
Will also compare it my Sigma 16-28/2.8 at 24 and 28mm.

I love the shadows shot!

I haven't had any pulsing issues. I think Mike's explanation makes sense--that harbor picture is a chaos of overlapping high contrast lines, almost impossible to tease apart. I think it was the camera that was having trouble rather than the lens.

Thanks Chiron.

I was able to reproduce it about 30 mins ago on a bush in my back yard (30 mins before sunrise on a cloudy morning). Low light seems to be the cause. The bush (a rhododendron) had detail but no vertical lines. As an example of the light level the exposure was about 1/10. F4.5. 12.800 iso. I switched to expand spot and that also fixed it, though today it was not as bad a Sunday. I switched the lens from the A7CR to an A1 and could not reproduce it so it could well be the camera, maybe an interaction. I will have to try another couple of lenses on the A7CR.

Here'd another from Sunday

Will be interested in the Sigma comparison. Also interested in how the Sony blurs the background at 50mm f2.8 vs. Sigma at 70mm f2.8.

I just picked up the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, with hopes to be my single cruise lens on an A7cII, but I'm intrigued by this more portable Sony. It's almost double the price though. Looking forward to the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 comparison, which has been compared to the Tamron.

Follow up kit question. Now that I have the Sony 24-50/2.8 G and will probably replace my Sigma 16-28/2.8 with the new Sony 16-25/2.8 I’m looking for a few faster but small primes in that range to pair with them for lower light situations. I have the fast GM primes but want something smaller/lighter at maybe f/2 or f/1.8 at 35mm or 40mm or maybe even 50mm to include. I can use the FE 35/1.8 or 55/1.8 ZA but none of these have aperture rings or the other features of a G/GM lens. At 20mm I can use that G 20/1.8 but when will Sony give us updated G lenses at 24, 28, 35, or 50 that are faster? Th small G prime trio doesn’t cut it because the new f/2.8 zooms really cover those.

Thanks! For giggles, I tried the 24-50, GM II and new Sigma II. I personally think that the new Sigma II is better than the 24-50, and is very, very good compared to the GM II. Based on the pixel peeping, I'd go with the Sigma II as the best bang for the buck, and deal with the size differences from the 24-50.

The lens arrived. Looks and feels just as I expected: excellent. A little smaller and a little lighter than the 20-70mm, which I think makes it a better match for the scale of the a7CR.

Only test shots in my office so far, but they look good. I could see that the distortion at the wide end is pretty significant, so I decided to make a Lightroom profile right away. (I have a feeling it may be a while before Adobe makes one).

I'll post some images as soon as I get some sunlight.

Thanks for the profile, Mike. The hard vignetting at 24mm f/2.8 was a little surprising, had to crop initially to deal with it but this takes care of it (I know with the same ultimate effect, but it's certainly easier).

I shot it last night doing an awards event and really liked the feel of it. Images look nice and crisp but still with a nice look to them. Loved the focal lengths as worked really nice. I used it on the A7rV rental and my 85 on my A7CR both outfitted with transmitters for my Wescott FJ 400 unit and just a breeze to use

Does anyone have thoughts on how this compares iq wise to the compact g lenses (24, 40, 50)?
