I think I'm going to go out on a limb and get one. I loved the 500 PF and this is very similar to that lens. I'd love for it to be 600mm, even if it was f/6.3, but you can't always get everything. The biggest letdown is the lack of TC support due to it being third party.

I used the 500PF for two years on the D500. In honesty, it was a great lens but always felt 100mm short. I am amazed that Sigma managed to make the lens just as small and light without Nikon's PF element.

I am still weighing my options, there have been so many new releases for a lightweight 500/600mm lens option lately, that I guess I need some time to figure out the best choice for me.

-300GM with both converters
-Sigma 500
-Nikon Z8 + 600PF

Obviously, the Sigma is by far the least expensive option, and not neccessarily the worst optically or performance wise. It is just those extra 100mm the other options have...

500mm feels simultaneously too short and too long IMO.

I know what you mean. If I only went out with one body and lens I'd probably go with the Nikon combo, despite the much higher cost. My hesitation comes from carrying other gear for macro and landscapes when I go out and having an extra body in the bag adds weight. Not the end of the world and its actually not a huge difference because of how much heavier the 200-600 is, but still makes a difference.

A full system switch doesn't sound appealing to me, mostly due to random accessories I'd need to repurchase. I also tend to prefer the Sony system below 200mm.

I know primes aren't well known for their MFD, but I was hoping for a little better than 125".

I’m going to say, Sigma should have gone around the Sony TC limitation by straight up releasing a 700mm f/8.

So IBIS is not used when 3rd party lens has OS.
OS just stabilizes, it should not matter if a TC is being used.
A TC could be used but there is no current TC that could be used.
If someone modified a Sony 1.4 TC and made the electrical contacts a 'straight thru' connection, no TC would be reported.
The TC would obviously then have limited use.
If one wants a small, light weight 500, this type of hack may well become reality making this Sigma far more appealing.

Agree. The Sony 300 GM +2XTC has even shorter MFD than the 200-600. I am likely to get the 300 GM when the price comes down a couple hundred bucks. I don't really need one for a few more months.

If it could take a TC on Sony mount, I’d buy one right now.

But no TC support. 15fps limited.

IDK Gonna have to think about it

A 500mm prime lens is not a walk around lens so it’s kind of silly to show it in that application in the B&H explora video.

500 is good for field sports and wildlife. For people disappointed for lack of a compatible TC, this lens would do well on an a7rV or a1 where you can punch in with apsc crop to 750 and retain a good chunk of resolution. The price is pretty competitive. I’d personally like to see it closer to $2500 but a sale could get us close in a year or less.

Seems like it would be pretty great for birding with a high mpx body. My 200-600 is hard to beat for versatility and framing. But at the long end I believe it renders wider than true 600. So maybe this Sigma could beat it under certain scenarios. I’ll be watching this one.

I know you get a little more light but why would someone choose this over the 200-600? The Sony gives you native glass benefits, the option to zoom and it's quite a bit cheaper. Not saying anyone is wrong for choosing this lens just curious on the thought process. I don't photograph birds so I'm clueless to the needs of that market.

SIze and weight are the two big factors for me. That and primes tend to render better than zooms.

When I shot Nikon I had a great copy of the 200-500 but when I got the 500 PF it almost never left my D500 simply because it was so much light and easier to carry around than the 200-500 (yes, I know the 200-600 is superior to the 200-500 in multiple ways). The 500 PF is the lens I missed the most when I switched to Sony.

I second the "why not a 200-600" comment. The 500mm isn't small enough to really make a difference in carrying IMO - either way you're dedicating a lot of bag space, and at the end of the day, there's so much more flexibility to the zoom.

Maybe when I see some more reviews out, the image quality will make enough of a difference, but that price still feels steep when good zooms around that FL are below $2K.

As for the 15mm, my preorder is in. Looks like the performance on stars is incredible, and I'm excited to try this lens out in milky way season.

I think you really have to try a lens like the 500 PF to fully appreciate the weight savings over one of the 200-600 options. It feels more like a 70-200 f/2.8 in use. They seem similar, but I far prefer the smaller telephoto primes in the real world from a usability standpoint. They are also a few inches shorter, which again makes more difference in practice than on paper.

I wonder if Sigma could get around the Sony TC issue by building a 1.4x TC into a lens.
This looks like an excellent lens for L mount where TCs can be used.

I don't understand one thing, 500PF seemed to be extremely popular but so many people here are saying a mid-aperture 500mm prime makes little sense. So, was Nikon 200-500 so bad (optics, size/weight, AF, ...) that it made 500PF great?
