p.1 #1 · Mini Fridge for film storage with a “mini” footprint.

My better half has made some “hints” that my film is taking up precious space in the main (food) refrigerator. In order to appease her (and not sleep in the dog house), I’ve been looking at getting a small mini fridge. Small, in the sense that I can place it on an IKEA Kallax bookshelf (bookshelf orientated on its side, lengthwise) in our guest room. I don’t want to place the mini fridge on the floor/carpet, so a small footprint would be fantastic.

I’ve scoured over Amazon, Wal-Mart and various online retailers, and I’ve found really small mini fridges that could fit on a computer desk with ease. However, there are complaints of the fridges not being cool enough and/or turning off and cycling warm air. Do any of you film nerdz (I’m one!🤓 ) out there have a similar mini fridge setup going that’s the bee’s knees?

Following this post with interest - I was thinking along the same line a few years back, then I also moved. Now this idea has become sort of redundant for me. I am shooting much less film and have barely any storage need for it at this point. Otherwise I would likely get a smaller one to put in my garage.

I took a different approach. Dedicated full-size fridge for film and beer.

It can also be used to accommodate any spillover from the main fridge, which gives me the right to make "hints" when any overflow items take up precious space!

I would go all out and get a meat locker type freezer for the garage or some spare room. The fact that you can keep whole birds and sides of beef along with boxes or TMax enhances the WAF. Where I used to live in New Jersey practically every home had one. If someone brags they have a body of an 18 year old it might actually be true.

I’ve asked a similar question on one of the analog subs of Reddit and one person mentioned that the reason the mini fridges fail is because they really only cool about -20F below ambient, and in the summer months ambient can still be warm. Plus, the mini fridges use Peltier tech over compressors to keep the size of the fridge “mini”. A reduction of size and the smaller wattage from a Peltier system reduces the overall total cooling capacity. No free lunch! Others have mentioned that the mini fridges should only be used for temporary cooling, like when at a hotel without a fridge or on long car/camping trips. Either way, they don’t seem to be too reliable for the long run.

I think you’re correct, in that I should be looking for a freezer (with a compressor and not Peltier tech) for proper temperature regulation and overall system longevity. Good thing I’m not a cannibal as there would be more competition for film space in the freezer.

Now to go down the rabbit hole of finding a small/mini freezer since our overall space is quite limited.

Mini Freezer

I didn’t even think about Wayfair. Great recommendation! That’s a nice freezer there. I’d like one in the ~1 cubic feet variety. Time to do some deep diving.

Don't forget to leave room for film stash expansion!
