p.1 #1 · Return to the Serengeti with one eye open!
Congratulations to marc2307 for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 3 votes - View Previous Winners
Have recently returned from the Serengeti and couldn't think of a better way of getting back in the saddle and doing what I love after suffering a bad retinal detachment in my left eye.
Fortunately I still had my viewfinder eye to see the splendor & beauty of the Serengeti during a particular heavy rainy season.
Here are some of my favorites, hope you enjoy them.
Lamai storm King
The Lamai pride male poses to the backdrop of an amazing storm front
Lamai Wedge, Northern Serengeti- TZ.
Often the best time for a Cheetah to hunt is right in the middle of a downpour. Most game will turn their backs against the wind & rain, and all approaching sounds are deafened.
Here this adult male Cheetah called Mpaka was in luck and was soon to be feasting on a sub adult Warthog.

Mpaka's reward, a sub adult Warthog she patiently waited 90 mins for.

I'm a bit late........but wishing everyone all the very best for a bright and happy 2024!

Leopardess sunset
A new leopardess has taken over a territory in this part of Northern Serengeti bringing with her a daughter of around 15 mths.
Here Moma poses on a kopje (rock) to the backdrop of another glorious Serengeti sunset.

Moving day
A mother carries the first of her 4, eight week old cubs to a new den location, she will do this every few days to a week to avoid predators being aware via sights & smells.

On dawn patrol
A big mature male Leopard strides confidently through the grassland plains of Lamai watched over by a vigilant Thompsons Gazelle in the background. His tail is up & curled, sending out a message "not hunting....just passing through!" 😉

Leopardess with freshly caught Oribi
A real privilege to witness this mother stalk and take down an adult male Oribi, one late evening.
As often with hunting, it happened @ dusk, with zero chance of getting worthwhile (action) images. She did however grant us this fine image of her proudly displaying her talents as one of the top ultimate African predators.

p.1 #2 · Return to the Serengeti with one eye open!
Marc, what a wonderful experience to have for a lifetime. These are well seen and captured and it looks like the Z9 did right by you! Only those who have experienced issues with vision can really appreciate what you have experienced and captured. Beautiful and congrats!

Marc,
I'm pretty much in awe of this set of images -- great work!
I promise you that if that first image was mine, it would end up a 40X60 Canvas print somewhere on my wall.
What's the current status on your detached retina -- hopefully healing?
I had a partial detachment a few years back, and thankfully the laser surgery to repair it was very successful -- I pray that yours is mending as well.

Many thanks Greg
Have just had my final operation on my return and the eyesight in my left eye is almost back to what it was before the detachment, the full repair time can take up to 12 months,
so it's been a huge relief!

What a beautiful picture set of images Marc. Nicely detailed, they are all great. I’m glad your eye is bouncing back. As we advance in age you really learn to appreciate good health.

Not bad for a one eyed guy. Think of all you missed in the left periphery😏
Really happy your vision has mostly returned…you’re a good patient and had a fabulous surgeon too.
This set is quite extraordinary…but I’ve felt that about lots of your images.

After my last successful operation, having full periphery back comes in very handy for driving!
