Marrakech is interesting with great food, markets, art and museums. Near Marrakech is Essouria. Great for photos by the seacoast and the seaport filled with fishing boats, fun to roam around in the early morning. Also, do a desert sleepover in the Sahara with outstanding sunsets and sunrises, and you can stay overnight in a luxury desert camp. Atlas mountains are spectacular. And you can end your visit at a farm with a cooking class in the Orika valley. Morocco is a fabulous place with great sights, nice people, interesting food, and a different experience. Best to have a car and driver, and guides in each location for custom coverage and easy travel. Enjoy! Best, Ted H

Went to Marrakesh before the pandemic and stayed in the medina for a few days. It was a fascinating experience, although I was a bit wary about using my camera too much. Culturally and religiously, people do not like being photographed. It makes them suspicious and uncomfortable, so be aware of that. In the main square of Jemma al Fna, people are probably more accustomed to being photographed, so it's probably more acceptable. But use common sense. If someone does not want to be photographed, don't press the issue.

There are wonderful religious sites, tombs, palaces, etc, along with several great restaurants. I wouldn't eat the street food, though plenty of people do and seem to be fine (and plenty of people do and also get sick ). Depending on where you are staying, your hotel concierge might be able to give you recommendations on restaurants, hamams, etc.

If you enjoy gardens, the Jardin Majorelle is lovely; Le Jardin Secret will also be nice and less crowded.

Taking a cooking class, as the previous commenter suggested, sounds like a great idea! The food in Morocco is delicious.

If you don’t have a place booked yet, try to stay at a riad, much more intimate experience than a hotel. Get one right near the Medina as it will allow you to easily visit the Medina early morning and later at night. Photography wise, I’d spend most of your time in the Medina, walk the side alleys, try to get into a leather tannery, just sit back and watch the locals carry out their business.

You need to take care when taking photos of the locals. Many don’t want their photos taken and you need to respect that. The way I approached things was I got permission from the shop keeper and then I’d sit and wait for nice intimate interactions of the shop keeper with their customers. It’s amazing how much good will buying something in the shop goes towards getting permission granted to take photos.

The Jemma al Fna is ok to walk through…but it really a 3 ring circus that did not grab my attention. However the food in the square is very good, recommended.

Dress conservatively, it’s a very religious country and one should respect that. Keep an eye on your equipment, but don’t walk around paranoid.

Where else are you going in Morocco?

Thanks for the tips.
Yep, planning to sleep in riad, not hotel

Well, just now we know the trip will be for about 5 days max.
Flight to Marrakesh first. Then I was looking for a place I could see elephants (its Africa right?) but only place I could find is their Zoo in Rabat, so will probably take a train there.
Wanted to See Casablanca, but not sure if really is a point (I like the movie, but the thing is there wasn't really anything shown in movie from Casablanca).
One day trip to Zoo.
One day some activity in a desert or something like Camel ride..
Then rest roaming around Medina in Marrakesh. One evening a nice dinner in Marrakesh, my daughter's 18th birthday, but have not yet picked any place.

Unless you have some good places that I could add?

You've gotten some good advice already. My 2 cents worth is to simply avoid Casablanca. Really just a busy city with one or two interesting buildings. Some places I visited can be seen here:

The huge ornATE new Casalanca Mosque, exspecially tile work and fountains are magnificen.
Rabat has much to see, use a guide. Fez has much more. My 24-120 zoom lens ws invalable Uuse a lolcal guide,. For touristic views (Movie"Casablanca" try exteriors of Rick's cafe, also the town square, post office,There are numopus opportunitiews in Marakech: market square, meal tents, snake charmers, the shops, gardens, streets, people, Zoom lens essential. High ISO.

I think you are trying to do too much in 5 days. I’d split the 5 days between Marrakech and a desert overnight tour on camels. Spending a full day travelling to the Rabat zoo to take photos of an elephant is something low on my list when visiting Morocco. Surely a zoo in the UK has elephants.

We did a 17 days tour to Morocco recently. We had a Mercedes Van with a great driver. Spent time in Marrakech, Sahara Desert, Fes, Rabat, Casablanca, Essouria, Blue City and Tangier. We stayed mostly in Riads within Medina and it was very convenient to visit restaurants, shops, museums within medina. We really enjoyed the overnight stay in Sahara desert and a camel trip. Avoided street food.

With only 5 days, it's better to avoid Casablanca. It's like any modern city with lots of traffic. We didn't see anything unique there other than the large Mosque and it's intricate work.

I would avoid traveling to Rabat to see Zoo.

5 days could cover Marrakech, Sahara Desert through Atlas Mountains and back. You would see a city like Marrakech and rural areas on the way to the Sahara.

Used Sony A7R V with 24-70 2.8 Sigma. Most people didn't like their photos taken. Still one can take plenty of photos of places, animals, landscape etc.

What everyone else said, plus my personal experience from circa 2015:

Forget the Zoo and Casablanca. 5 days will barely cover Marrakech plus a quick trip into the desert/mountains.

Marrakech:

All the tourists go to the Medina and Jemaa el-Fna.

Try going to:
Saadian Tombs
Badi Palace
Bahia Palace
House of Photography (small but nice)
The gardens are nice as well, but not particularly Moroccan.

On your next trip go to Fes and Volubilis and Chefchaouen.

When you get tired of being pestered (not really an issue in Marrakech, but it can be elsewhere) just hire a local guide. If you have a guide with you no one will pester you.

We had no issues at all with the food. We did find bottles of water that had been refilled, so we only bought water at proper grocery stores, not from street vendors.

Enjoy the tea.

Maybe I can be late, but here my two cents.
Marocco is an amazing country to visit: from sea, to historical cities, to desert and mountains where you could even sky during winter time.
I have been inloved wit it, even if chaotic and difficult to understand.
In the big (touristic) cities the religion is not so pressing: you can see burkas and miniskirts.
Just use your brain (as everywhere in the world) to understand where it is the case to cover yourself.
The farmer you go to these places, the stricter is the religious feeling, as everywhere in the world.

Marrakech and Fes are quite far each other: around 7/8 hours by train, car or bus, so I would avoid to move from south to north if you do not plan a round trip of at least 15 days.
Chefchaouen Is worth the trip, but it is even more distant: take one day go/shoot/back from Meknes.
Rabat is 5 hours from Marrakech.

If you want to have a unique experience, take your time and stay, as I said, for two weeks or more: it is a “slow” country, filled with friendly people.
Do the round trip: Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat (the Medina worth), Meknes, Chefchaouen, Fes, pass the Atlas and do some hiking (Sherpa available),Thingir, Ouarzazate, sleep in the desert, Agadir, Essaouira and back to Marrakech.
More or less this would be my next visit to Marocco: you can expand to the desert, to Tangier and Gibilter, do more hiking.
Consider 4 hours every time you move from one place to another.

Train is a good way to travel, up to where it is possible: clean and safe: car is a step below.
Bus/taxis can be a little bit crowded for our standards, but generally they are save and a source of interesting discoveries.
Food is good, just avoid if possible to drink plain water: we are not used and we can get sick.
Riads are perfect to stay, you will miss them when you’ll be back!
Taxis are a great way to visit the city and the neighborhood.

Another good way is to hire someone with a good car that can arrange the trip and drive you through all the trip.
In case you want to do it and you do not find a valid solution, ping me:I can give you a contact.

I second everything said here. Definitely have a car and driver planned ahead of time. It’s an easy country to travel by car, and your driver will take you everywhere you need and be ready first thing in the morning no matter where you stay. Check out chefchaouen, sure the color of everything is great but it’s also an awesome town, and actually has amazing Chinese food lol
