When I arrived just before sunset at the Park I could see that low misty clouds had descended over much of the mountains and I had hopes of foggy forest possibilities the next day. As I set out from camp that following morning it had indeed become a wonderland of moody forests and overlooks as the foggy clouds added so much atmosphere, including later in the day when the mist was beginning to lift at higher elevations. It made for the most productive landscape photography day of my life and set a standard for magical conditions that will be hard to measure up to on a normal clear day. In fact the very next day following a hard overnight freeze it was clear with no more moodiness and most of the colors gone. I am very grateful for that single day!

I sure do agree Russell! As much as I enjoy shooting the grand landscapes of the West, a foggy Eastern forest is just about the most special place for me to hang out and make images. Thanks for viewing!

Wow, I’m a sucker for moody scenes…these really are great. The compositions and processing of no. 6 and 8 are just superb. They really provide an intimate feeling…like it’s only you and nature, nothing else.

Thank you Gero! I made about 24 different compositions that day which is way beyond what I could normally find under ordinary conditions.

Very much appreciate your comments, Harry! I really like your word about the intimate feel. I crave that feeling of it being just me and the landscape, and when in that mental/emotional space I think it helps the focus on finding and making meaningful compositions.

Where are you traveling to in 2024?

I kept viewing these photos for a while. The nuances are significant. The punchy fall colors subdued by the fog create a fabulous balance. 2, 4, 5 especially for me.

Where are you traveling to in 2024?

Ross, so far I have a couple trips planned. Heading to Mexico ( SAN Miguel and La Manzanilla ) in mid February for a couple months. I’m also planning out a photography trip to the Big Island, Hawaii. My wife’s sister / brother-in-law live there and we are planning on visiting and photography adventures from their place. Brother-in-law knows the island inside out…should be good.
