How much does she shoot at 2.8. Usually one stop of noise can be taken care of with today’s noise reduction.

Enough but most shots could be higher ISO and still ok. Looking at her photos, 75% are probably “scenes” whilst travelling. 25% candid pictures of our family.

p.3 #2 · Move from Sony 16-35 PZ to 16-35 GM II?

When I switched from Nikon to Sony last fall I started my adventure with the A7CR, 16-35 PZ, and 50 F1.8 as a lightweight walk around combo. I actually quite liked the 16-35 PZ, did not mind the power zoom, and never wanted the GM as I do not value the added weight to get F2.8 in that focal range . Even though the 16-35 performed spectacularly I did not like 35mm limitation and decided to purchase the 20-70 F4. I love the range of the 20-70 much better and find the sharpness and rendering quite nice so it is

Good to know! Have you paired the 20-70 with anything?

FWIW, for a light walk around kit, I found the combination of the PZ and Tamron 28-200 very effective.

Yes, I currently have the Sony 40mm F2.5 I use on my A7CR for a light grab and go. It's OK but I usually prefer having the 20-70 flexibility.

Until recently I also had the Tamron 70-180 F2.8 G2 which I purchased mainly for a relatively fast portrait telephoto my wife could use. We ended up taking it to Costa Rica and using it on the A7CR in APSC mode for some wildlife photography. After cropping in post we got some amazing wildlife photos with it. Not what the lens was intended for but it performed very nicely and was relatively small to travel with. My only complaint with the Tamron is the eye AF was spotty and I personally found the background blur kinda busy/choppy. As part of a kit strategy I decided to sell it and get the Sony 70-200 F4 with 1.4x teleconverter instead for similar light weight but more telephoto travel setup. My long term plan is to add the Sony 200-600 that will also work with the 1.4x for serious wildlife photography. I am currently playing with the Samyang 135mm F1.8 to see if it would be the right lens for outdoor portraits of the grandkids but so far I am not that impressed with the AF on it so I may return it.

Thanks that’s handy. How do you find the 70-200 f4 vs your former Tamron 70-180 G2?

I still feel very torn about the 20-70! I think I’d enjoy the weight in hand a lot more.

I don't have the 70-200 F4 II yet so I can't give a fair assessment. I have tried it in the store and first impression was I liked the switch placement and the zoom felt smoother with maybe a little better AF.

The 20-70 is heavier than the 16-35 PZ and not too much lighter than the 16-35 GM II so if weight is a big criteria I would stick with the 16-35 PZ. In fact, I quite miss how the PZ felt on the A7CR and the only reason I prefer the 20-70 is the focal range suites our needs better. Here are weights from Sony website.

16-35 F4 PZ - 353g.
16-35 F2.8 GM II - 547g
20-70 F4 G - 488g

I'd never touch the 16-35s. 12-24 all the way.
