Thanks, for your input. I used the A1 with 200-600 yesterday shooting waves and surfing. Going to look at the shots and video today. But the lens just can't keep up like the 70-200 V2. Missed my 400 GM yesterday. Expecting the 300 to be that much better at nailing fast action.
Will hold off on the update since I have a month long trip coming up and do not want to do changes now.
I got the lens back, but didn't want to answer this until I used it for a while. It works as normal. As related before the problem was MR Encoder unit or the potentiometer (I think they are basically the same thing)

Are you sure it's the 200-600 that can't keep up. In my experience the 200-600 is every bit as fast as any other lens, keeps up no trouble at all with the fastest action I can throw at it and most of this would be orders of magnitude faster than surfing or waves are.

The 200-600 is amazing for the price, but it is not as good as the big primes in my experience.
Surfing and waves are not fast, but if you are on one surfer and swing right or left at 400 mm and need to nail a shot right away it is not like my 400 GM, but that is my experience. All of these shots are handheld. If the 200-600 is locked on it is no problem following that bird at speed, same with surfing. But that is not where I see the difference.
I follow birds at times for practice and when with my buddy who shoots birds. 200-600 preforms well but I am not swinging all over the place as when there are 20 high end surfers and I am trying to nail shots all over the place.

Ah, "keeping up" with you switching - yes the 600 is quite a bit quicker to rack focus like that.
