I bought an Epson P-900 in Nov, 2021. It died in Jan 2023, just out of warranty. Epson kindly replaced it with a refurbished one. This has worked just fine until today, when it reported "Printer error. Turn the power off and on again... 000024." I have turned it off and on a number of times and cannot get past this screen. Not sure what error 000024 is, but it appears to be fatal. I will be contacting Epson tomorrow to see if they will replace it.
First, does anyone know what code 000024 is? Is there any fix I can do?
Second, in the event Epson does not replace it, I would be leery about getting another P-900. What have you P-900 users experienced? Am I just unlucky or is the P-900 plagued with problems and something to stay away from?
Even though ink levels might be "reported" as full, one or more may not be (hence a cartridge error). Or there may be something else wrong with a cartridge's chip.
Do you happen to have a set of spares you could substitute? If that worked, you could try to pin the error to a specific cartridge from your original set.
Did you ever get this resolved?
Just picked up a used P700 so trying to learn more about it and the P900.
There is a pdf service manual available for $10, not that you would do any repairs but it's informative.
Turns out there was a small broken part in the paper transport system. Fixing would require complete disassembly, rendering it essentially non-fixable (labor would have been more than the new printer). I ended up getting a new P900, but this time I will purchase additional warranties. Epson extended warranties are available in 1 year increments, up to a total of 4 extensions, giving up to 5 years of warranty. Yes, it pricey (about $180/year), but given that the P900 appears to have major issues that what I've decided to do.

Did Epson extend any consideration to you when you bought the third p900.
And, given the troubles you have had and the cost of the extended contracts, what do value so strongly about the p900 that you are hanging in there with it?
Epson gave me nothing. I'm not particularly happy about that, of course.
The main reason I'm staying with the p900 is that I have 2+ complete sets of inks and LOTS of Epson paper.
I've had two Epson 3880s fail. (The failures occurred in a total of less than 5 years use. ) With the last one there were actual brass/gold wire fragments laying on top of the mechanical portion. The device had never been moved or abused. Of course, now I'm left with the problem of not having the $$$ for another printer.
I'm questioning if I'd ever try Epson again. OTOH, one of the compelling arguments for an Epson replacement is the Joh Cone ink and imaging solutions. If you haven't explored his work/product, I suggest you do. (I've also had no complaints with the quality of the 3880's print.)
Thus I have two major concerns in moving to a Canon or similar device: 1) Will it/does it last longer than the 3880's did? Second, are we locked into using only 'Canon Branded' inks? The ink price is a big issue. (I sincerely wish the US would follow the EU's lead in making manufacturers provide for supplies other than their own. Sigh, with the corporate control of so much of the political process, I doubt this will happen anytime soon.)
Given reasonable answers to these questions would likely prompt me to move to their tools. If or until such happens (and sufficient cash falls out of the sky), I'm hanging in printer nether space.
My in-laws had this error. As the printer started up it did all the initial movements and noises, with the carriage moving in and out a bit from the right side, until ~2min 10secs into it when the carriage looked like it wanted to move out again but couldn't. I used a strong flashlight shined through the tinted cover to see. Only later I learned there is a menu option to turn on a light on the inside!
Ultimately updating the firmware fixed it, but with the error, or during startup, the printer would not let me update. At least not the one time I tried from the printer menu during startup. Maybe there is another way, so if you can update the firmware somehow, do it, but for me, not knowing the firmware update was the solution, this is how it played out:
Looking for the issue, I took the back panel and right side panel off.
See pages 107 and 113 of this service manual: https://www.scribd.com/document/806396216/epson-surecolor-p700-p703-704-706-p900-p903-p904-p906-service-manual-sm-202108-c
Removing a few screws and sliding the covers, with some force, is all that's needed. For the right side I recall giving it a good bump with my palm heel. No spudger tool to pry tabs/hooks was needed. The manual shows the direction to slide the panels.
Turning it on with the right side open, I could see the gears moving and the CR-lock mechanism lock and unlock the carriage at times, and the intentional gear rotations that do that. But at about 2:10, despite what seemed like the intentional gear movement to release the CR-lock, it did not and the carriage tried moving while locked and failed, causing 000024. It almost looked like the carriage was trying to move too soon before the CR-lock was released.
On the next run, at about 2:10 I used a small screwdriver to help the CR-lock release and the carriage moved like it should! There were more noises and movements, and new fan-like noises from the back that I never heard before. It's not my printer so I don't know what it usually does. The started time was over 5+ minutes long! I don't know if this is normal, but wow. snooze fest. After the 5+ minutes, it was done and I had a normal display with no error!
Through the printer menu I connected to wifi and updated the firmware. The update progress status is poor and took probably 5+ long worrisome minutes.
After the update, it restarted and the startup was different and just shy of 1 minute.
And it prints now!
I can't upload a photo, but I posted the same experience with a photo to reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Epson/comments/1fo9qan/comment/p81dd4i
