I recently spent some time visiting my best friend Vinnie, who moved from Portland Oregon to Kankakee Illinois at the beginning of 2023. So far this is my third time visiting him since he moved and I've now seen the area during Fall, Winter, and Summer. I plan on visiting again in April for his birthday, which would mean i've seen the area in all four seasons. Anyways, during this last visit he took me to see Chicago for the first time (previously I had only been through Chicago while being driven to and from the airport). He likes to photograph things that are not people, whereas I love to photograph people and he's my favorite person to photograph, so of course 99% of my photos in Chicago are portraits or quick snaps of Vinnie. Because these are just for fun shots and nothing professional, I edited most shots individually rather than giving them all the same look and I also take the opportunity to experiment a little (hence the vintage inspired edit on one of the photos)..
Canon 5D MKIII, Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens, available light.
All good, Daniel! #7 intrigues me, the coincidence, the proximity of the note "woke up today; not a bad start" signed with a happy face. Embodies the positivity Dan notes.
With the state of the World is such disarray...we need a smile!
Hope you had a grand time! Wonderful images!
Dan
Thanks Dan! It's interesting because I don't typically gravitate to smiling portraits, but lately I've been capturing them much more often and finding that I like them much more than I used to.
It was a lot of fun. I flew to Illinois to stay with my friend for about a week, and then we drove to La Crosse Wisconsin to his family (my extended family at this point). I have lots more photos from the trip, but I'd rather not monopolize the message board.

Thank you. We didn't notice the note (at least I didn't) until after taking the shot. I was paying much more attention to lighting and background, so it ended up being a happy accident.

Glad to hear you had fun in a very friendly environment Daniel! Like I stated above..the World is NOT in a good place at this time!
Maybe posting more of your images will send smiles to all the members here! Monopolize? I doubt that Daniel! You are well respected member, friend and photographer!
great stuff, love the bokeh balls on teh first one. Based on your description, and the other shots near the river walk I'd guess that is northern part of lower wacker drive where its exposes at street level.

Thanks Dan, I really appreciate the kind words.
I always do lots of family photos when I visit Vinnie's family, so I'll share my favorites in one post fairly soon.
Nice portraits of your friend. No. 7 is my favorite -- relaxed pose with a natural smile, nice lighting, and the note adds a little humor to go with the smile. Nice work on all of these.

Thank you Greg. The note is my favorite detail in the shot, besides my friend's expression. At that point of the day we were both tired and on our way back to the car to leave the city. Before leaving I wanted a shot that included the CTA structure, so I quickly posed Vinnie in that spot without really taking the time to look at all of the details, and took a few shots. It was only after looking at the shots on the back of the camera did we notice that little note in the shot. A nice little happy accident.
