For various reasons I have to produce a crop of a square photograph.

Original

Crop A

Crop B

Square Crop B

Which one do you think works better - and why?

I prefer crop A. Crop B is just a bit too close.

In my opinion go with original. I think it needs a bit of the environment to give it a sense of place.

I agree but I will say that #2&3 have a nice feel to them for different reasons.

I agree, but the OP stated that they had to crop 1x1. Crop A is pretty much the original cropped to a 1x1. I might have cropped a bit more off the bottom to give more headroom and sense of place.

The "original" isn't completely correct. Crop A includes a pole of the left side of the jacket which is missing in the original photo.

I assume there isn't more space on the right side of the photo? I like the headroom provided by B, but with the wider FOV in A. If A had more space on the right to show the arm, it would also have the additional space above the head, which would be perfect for a square shot. Given that's unlikely to be the case I still think A would be my preference over B, but it looks like you could just take the framing from A, and use the same bottom point from B.

Basically I think if you moved Crop A upwards to the same place you cut off the bottom on B it would probably look the best. (Aka B with a less tight crop)
