p.20 #1 · Canon 200-800?

No, it is not sane for me to have both the 100-500 and 200-800, especially as I have the RF 100-400. Much GAS there at several occasions...

My present line of thoughts is that if the R5mk2 is a true step up, I´ll throw in both my R5 and the 100-500 to get the upgrade.

Or if Canon would make the R7mk2 something really special without all the weaknesses of the R7, I would throw in the 200-800, but not the R5. Its too good, also with the 100-500. The 280-1280mm field of view with the 200-800 on a R72 sound far more useful than it actually is. But... we are not there yet.

I got to play with a sample of this lens yesterday. I feel like it’s pretty solid. The tripod foot setup on this is much better than the 100-500. I wish they would have made the foot removable but at least this thing isn’t going to fall off when you don’t want it to.

Lack of switches is a minor complaint. Overall it feels solid. Super fast AF. Balances well. It reminds me more of a 100-400 design just bigger.

Overall I would give it 8/10 which at this price point is great. I’m a really big fan of the R5 and R3 so I’m really interested to see what Canon does with the R5 mark ii.

Isn't it very front heavy, when zoomed in at 800mm? How is the general balance of the lens?

I have shown this before for local transportation. It started out for my DO 400 II so I didn't keep having to remove the lens hood and it ed to the 100-500. At location I use my PD shoulder strap and have a small lens pouch attached to the my belt for the TC.

I later came across this. Drop in so no zippers to worry about forgetting to do up. Once a brand new lens went flying out of a backpack style bag. I even took it to Europe as a checked but had clothes in it.

, I'm sure most would be shocked at my local transportation method of choice. Once I pull it out of the bag this is how it goes while I'm driving around looking for whatever I find.

My only concern with the new lens is size and weight. I had the 100 500 and Sony 200 600 at the same time and ended up selling the Sony due to weight. When I first preordered the 200 800 I was thinking I would sell the 100 500 but after some thought I've decided to keep both to start out with and see which I prefer the most and if either end up laying there and not getting used I'll let it go. I don't want to end up regretting anything until I know for sure and I've really loved the 100 500. It seldom gets unmounted from my R5. and spends alot of time as shown above. Note the "other" use for the foot.

Sounds very promising. Looking forward to hearing more hands on reviews once it starts to ship. Hope they are all just as positive as your first impressions.

Haha I do almost the same thing.
I fling my shoulder strap over the head rest and let the rig set on the seat with just enough "leash" to let it rest comfortably on the seat.

It's much easier with large lenses. My 600 f4 fits perfectly between the driver's seat and the back seat (backrest to backrest).

I like it. Good idea. I almost had one go off the end of the seat.

I would say it’s very similar to any other similar lens. Think the Sony 100-400 but bigger. It’s a nice lens overall. It doesn’t feel awkward to me.

I’m really tight with the owner of my local store. Plus the Canon rep was there!

When I placed my B&H pre-order, I don't think they had yet announced a "low stock alert" but they did shortly thereafter. It is now listed as back-ordered.

I wonder how many pre-orders won't immediately ship? How has B&H delivered before in these situations?

Mine is listed as backordered too but with an expected shipping date of 12/14/2023.
I think I waited a day or two before pre-ordering and did not see a low stock alert.

Are we thinking there was a rush on pre-orders or low supply?

I'm thinking both? It's probably a complicated lens to assemble and test, so production numbers maybe are limited. Then when the price posted as $1900 USD, lots of pure hobbyists like me jumped on it and demand spiked.

My order was in a couple days before Canon Japan announced low stock, however my B&H order doesn't show a ship date. It's possible that is because I placed the order as a "guest" and don't actually have a B&H account.

I'm waiting for some hands on reviews. I have a good deal of hesitancy about what this lens will really be. I don't use 800 that much (600 + 1.4x). It is slow and not a L lens. We'll see.

I initially pre-ordered, but I've taken a step back - I also want to see some hands-on reviews. And I really have to contemplate what it's getting me over my 100-500 and 1.4x. Yes, I realize that it has a little more focal length, but I have to figure out if it's a wise move to get one or not.

No use over-buying here.

In addition to slow and not a L, it will be very handholdable and carryaroundable, especially compared to the big white non-zoom lenses. If it fits your style, it is unmatched with the 200-800 range in one small(ish) package. But if you crave those totally mushed out backgrounds, no.

Hope you are right but I've got my doubts.

Perhaps you have doubts about the image quality? Yes, IQ is always an uncertainty before the evidence is evident. I have great hopes though, based on my own fact, applicable only in my small bubble that all the cheap line RF STM lenses deliver IQ far above their price points. Well, excepts perhaps the 24-240 that needs a part of the convenience a 10x zoom brings to the party, to fully satisfy the pixelpeeping me.

Well, early hands-on reviews and the MTF charts convinced me enough to pre-order. Copy variation is still a possibility, but part of the game. It seems anecdotally that copy variation was a much bigger 'thing' in the EF era. Lots more things in the optical path and AF path to go out of calibration perhaps.

I'll also be using on a low density R6 sensor. Maybe pixel peeping on an R7 would magnify any imperfections.

I'd been willing to settle for 200-600 f5.6 for example that would accept a 1.4x converter. 800mm and it's realtive slow apertures worries me. I got burned once and so I'm a little hesitant until something is in the hands of everyone rather than the mfg select few for a day. For those who have bought in advance, I hope it is all it appears to you to be.
