B&H is also being vague about when orders are going to be fulfilled. Can't get upset at them because it sounds like nobody knows what or how many lenses they are getting until they are delivered.
I cannot help but think that Canon dropped the ball on determining initial demand. Luckily it's not costing me a thing to keep the order in place. Would have been nice to chase the sandhill cranes this winter with the new lense... but not the end of the world.

Y. I also didn't find it particularly long. You are going 200-800. Not exactly something I will do routinely. But the flexibility of having that range is great.

Yup, people without having the lens on hand can be mislead by Youtubers.
If you place your left thumb on the top of the lens at 12:00 position (I don't hold it like that) at 200mm, and rotate to 800mm, the thumbs is between 7:00 to 8:00 position. It's not even at 6:00 position which would be 180 degrees.
I tried the similar thing on the RF100-500. Left thumb at 12:00 postion at 100mm. At 500 mm, the thumb is between 9:00 and 8:00 position.
FWIW Bestbuy.com briefly took ordering early yesterday morning around 5am (1/20). Delivery range was 2/2 to 2/9 (at least to the U.S. east coast). Typically BB only takes orders for product that is either enroute to a warehouse or ready-to-ship, so this range is not a meaningless filler. What I glean from this a new drop is coming end Jan/early Feb. I would think it would be sizable enough to allow fulfillment of all the Nov preorders since production has been running for at least a couple months now and I think the last drop was early Jan.

I've seen a fair amount of R7/100-500 vs R5/200-800, but what are thoughts on R5 + 100-500 vs. R6/R6II + 200-800? Setting aside weight differences, and for a use case of a single camera body, is more pixels on target with a lower resolution sensor comparable, or not, to cropping in on the higher resolution sensor with less reach?

I think there is a strong argument now that there is a 200-800, to use a R6II with it and get great results. .

Certainly the 200-800 enhances the 24mp bodies but 800mm isn't such a monstrous reach that you might use it on an R5 and still need to do a bit of cropping. And of course on and R7 it already crops 800 to and effective 1280mm. So, personally, it won't stop me from upgrading to the R5 II from the R5 whenever it ships. I like the R5's flexibility. I think you buy the R8/R6/R6II because that is the body you want, not because the 200-800 exists. The R6(II) has its own exclusive benefits for sure.

Cancelled my B&H pre-order and opted to pick up a 2x for my 100-500mm.
Still think the 200-800mm is an appealing lens, but the delay in availability gave me too much time to think the purchase through. I'm saving a good bit of $$ and getting the reach I need. And just tinkering with the 100-500mm w/2x in the backyard, I'm impressed with how well the two mate up.
Not saying I'll never get the 200-800mm, just not in the immediate future. Hoping my cancellation helps someone here get their order sooner than later.

I tossed my hat into the mix for this lens via Canon Price Watch's Street Price program. Got in line 11/14, order completed today (2/13) with approx. delivery date of 2/16. Deal includes a no tax sale and free shipping for a bit less than MSRP. Hope to be adding to the images thread soon.

Yeah I originally took a pass on pre-ordering at the announcement but saw CPW's offer and figured what the heck since it didn't require a CC and was a nice discount on a new lens. Like you, mine shipped out today. It looks like they got a decent # of units in based on the % of orders filled listed on my pre-order page this afternoon so hopefully this bodes will for everyone else waiting that the dam is about to break.
That's excellent you'll have yours by end of week. You must be in the midwest. I'm on the east coast so won't see it until next week. I just hope USPS takes care of it. That's the only thing that makes me nervous.
USPS will be fine IMO. The box from Canon is going to be inside something else and Canon's box is designed to keep the lens safe. I got my R6m2 through the program too, zero issues.
