I've been spending about 30-45 minutes each morning before going to work watching these two along with others...possibly offspring. Getting to the point where I'm getting to know their routines and preferred perches....so after these shots...looking to up my game regarding in-flight shots and anything besides the 'portrait' type shots.
So - until then. My best portrait of the female and male couple.
Thanks for looking!

Looking at yours then mine I think I over processed them
compensating for large crops. Maybe I should go back and
play with them. It's a tough species to get close to.

Thanks for posting these!

Yes...concur, a very tough bird to close the gap the distance with.
These were taken about 80-100 feet along a paved trail where the deadfall trees and branches are along the shore...so sort of have a slight cheat where you can sit, monitor, and quasi stalk along the trail to get shots. But - they are flighty for sure. Since the trails are heavily frequented by pedestrians and bikers...they have maybe a little bit more of acceptance of humans in their space...but I've never been able to stalk them closer than 80 feet. So - looking to possible blind-up or find other ways to totally hide myself.
I will now be looking for non-perching shots....in-flight, diving, and other types of shots...so looking forward to that challenge!

That first one is especially fine, J.C.!

Douglas - thanks sir for the kind words. I have quite a few shots of this female as I've canvased her prime fishing area. I watched lay the beatdown on a large fish for about 10 minutes and finally convinced myself I need to start learning how to do video on my camera and document some of this stuff.
Thanks....yeah, trying to adhere to the photo posting guidelines.

Two excellent images JC ! You are lucky to get 80-100 feet from them, in my experience that is close.
John
Thanks John. Yeah....it's a bag of mixed success. Sometimes they're a little more tolerable and let you offset a bit for better backgrounds....sometimes the bolt as soon as you reach for your camera.

Nice that you got both sexes. The second is my pick for the exposure

Thanks Morris. I've actually seen and capture more of the female than the male. Maybe I'm starting to rub off on her?
