These two are beautiful golden light images Scott.
Well said too. This 180-600 is a specialty lens, I’m elderly, and my 200-500 had become too heavy and the zoom is unacceptable after experiencing the 180-600’s.
Still, until they invent an anti-gravity accessory, the 180-600 is still heavier than I would like. So, I’ve been working on customizing my monopod with the right 3-legged foot.
The 180-600 is a keeper for my loons and butterflies. The first Monarchs will finally arrive here mid-July from Mexico and I’m excited. I put a lot of work into this wildflower garden. I’ll be working the perimeter with this lens on a monopod.

Thanks Robert. I forgot that the lens can also take the 1.4x TC, though conditions were very hazy and results would have been subpar this weekend.
This might be a lens I pick up when I see a clean one at a great price here, and just keep it around for those edge cases and use the 100-400 for everything else. I did make sure it will fit in my Ruggard cabinet
Probably just my rental being a beater, but the lens hood would absolutely not stay on when reversed and it was driving me nuts. Lots of slop in the mount as well, and I felt like I had to be pretty anal to carry it by the tripod foot and take some pressure off the mount while it was on my shoulder.
Here's the last batch of photos from it, unfortunately the airshow I rented it for got rained out after only a few planes had flown.

So I had been told last year and this year that my local lake has minks, but I had only seen one at a distance and it immediately ducked into a hole. Until yesterday that is, when my wife and I saw 3 minks, including one that was fearless enough/determined enough that it would walk past me at less than 3 feet while it was on patrol.

Black crowned night heron, I got this one in an animal sanctuary close to my home. He was standing in the only spot of sun that was going through the trees!

Nikon is quite clear in the manual of this lens (and other lenses of similar or greater weight) that the lens should be supported at all times and it should not be carried or held only hanging from the camera or camera strap, which could lead to damage to the camera mount, the lens mount, or the camera strap.
In some of the heavier lenses the language is even more strict.
As people typically treat expensive products they did not buy with their own money worse than they would their own products that they fully paid for from their pocket, it's not surprising that some of the rental lenses would have broken or loose mounts or hoods.

Soon after buying my 180-600 I removed the lens hood and it is now back into the Nikon factory box. This is a significant decreease in length/bulk. From my point of view, there is no need of it.
When I bought the 180-600, the sales person suggested a UV filter to protect the objective element. It took me just a few seconds to agree to that.
You see, several years ago I rented a 500 PF for a trip that required a flight. When I returned home and unpacked the luggage my heart sunk at the sight of shattered glass. But on quick inspection I was relieved to see that the rental company had installed a 95mm UV filter on the 500 PF. The front element was not touched. I was instantly sold on the value of a UV filter for glass protection. And that is when I stopped placing lenses in luggage the airline can handle.
I keep the lens cap attached as often as practical and am careful where I rest the front of the lens.

Like you, I didn't want to use that large hood with my 180-600, Robert. Wound up using this one - it's a nice short hood that I previously used on my 500pf and one other lens. Should add that it also allows the lens cap to be used with it.
