p.3 #1 · Who is buying the a7C II or a7CR?

After a lot of consideration I’m buying both to shrink my a7r3/a7IV/a7sIII kit. I’m also moving from 2.8 to f/4 zooms, the 16-35pz, 20-70 the new 70-200G. The NR in LR makes that extra stop irrelevant and just needless bulk. Add the 1.4/2x tc (280/400mm), plus the 26mp aps-c crop (420/600mm) with the CR and another 1.5x with clear image zoom (630/900mm) since it now supports full tracking functionality - and you have a powerhouse compact/travel kit. Throw in a few small/fast primes for low light and better bokeh like the 24GM, 50GM and 85/1.8 and you’re good. This is - for me - a near perfect FF kit to chase my toddler and knock out easy quick gigs and cover everything from ultra wide to BIF. Oct 12 can’t come fast enough for me. My 200-600 and 2.8 zooms are history. I may do the aps-c 11mm 1.8 as well for a fast wide. Love where Sony is going. The 61mp sensor really opens a lot of possibilities with lenses from all the small/fast/cheap crop options.

I'll probably buy the A7CR but will wait awhile to do so.

I'd consider swapping my A7III for one of the new A7C variations at some point down the road. The largest lens I own is the Tamron 70-180 and I only grab that a handful of times a year so a smaller body I think would be fine for me.

That said, I doubt either camera will make any real difference for my photography so I'm in no rush.

I have the A7Cii & the new 16-35 on order. I can back out of the 16-35 if I think it is too big, but I am hoping this will be a great compact FF landscape setup, with some fallback to do some portraits using a different lens. I had considered the A7CR, but just cant justify the extra money. Not sure I can even justify the extra money for the 16-35/2.8. I might just end up pairing the A7Cii with the 16-35/PZ.

Personally if I was looking at landscapes, I’d spend my money on the A7cr and the 16-35pz. I highly doubt you’ll see any difference between the 16-35 when stopped down and the extra pixels of the A7cr are always welcome in detailed landscapes.

Yeah...that seems to be the challenge. That is good advice, and I really need to consider that carefully. I will be mainly for landscapes and portraits stuff, maybe some macro. not much else. I have a 6700 for every day stuff.

I've been a long time A7C user - so much so that I don't use my A7RII very much. The one issue that I've had with the A7C is the lower resolution and the LPF that the sensor has. It just can't get all the sharpness and thus crop-ability out of my lenses.

Looking forward to the high resolution and (I think) no LPF of the A7C-R.

Another who will be buying an A6700 instead. If the A7Cr had a mechanical shutter I would have bought it, but from past experience I need a mechanical shutter for some of what I shoot. Plus the cost savings just about pay for a new 70-200 f4 Macro

As I use the APS-C crop mode of my A7RIV a lot with my 100-400 GM, the new body will help with that with the 70-200 mounted for a 2 camera setup, and be my travel camera along with my Sigma I series primes.

These cameras are likely to be out of stock after they are available.

Currently added the A6700 to my collection and have the version one of the A7C on sale. I admit I’m still considering buying the A7C II. Not the A7CR since I like my A7RV and its size and features to support the 61 Mpixel sensor. The two CFexpess card slots, 9 Mpixel EVF, and all axis rear higher quality LCD are things I don’t want to give up. Also the A7RV is better for me to match up with the FE 16-35/2.8 GM II I plan to get to complete my holy trinity lens collection. May still keep the A6700 to support a two body travel package but we will see.

I preordered the CII on launch day, then changed to CR 2 days later. Hope I make the first cut in Oct.

I have been looking for a companion for my A1. I had the A7RIV - it is a great camera but two similar big bodies often is a pain to lug around. CII would have been good, but somehow got spoilt by the ability to crop images in post and using the crop mode on the fly.

33MP would still be ok but I changed my mind in the end. Still a little bummed shelling out $3k for the CR, but don’t see myself buying another body in next 4-5 years at the very least. Plus the $150 grip included makes it around $2850 for the CR (I would have probably gotten that eventually).

My setup is going to be A1: for BIF (mainly my wife’s passion) and landscapes, important events or travel to really one in a lifetime places, special moments, and when 2 cameras are must. This thing is the true jack of all trades for both photo and video. For everything else, daily photos of life, quick run and gun clicks or photos when I travel solo, use the CR with small G/GM primes up to 50mm (relying on crop if needed).

I think I will end up using the CR a lot more to justify the price. Let’s see…

you might get one if you get the kit, but they charge $300 for that lens, on the a6700 it's just $100, I know it's much better and modern kit lens but still...

Ok, keep mulling over A7C II vs A7CR and which to get. So let’s ignore video between the two and look at the other differences between them. I may misstep or leave off what one has over the other so feel free to correct me

a7RC advantages;
- 61 MP vs. 33 MP
- 26 MP in APS-C mode
- grip included (but no Arca Swiss support so I’m not sure I would use it)
- pixel shift modes

a7C II advantages
- lower price
- 10 vs 8 frames per second
- 44 vs. 36 frames increased buffer depth
- lower output noise due to larger pixels ?
- larger number of AF focus point and more sensor coverage
- higher ISO of 51,200 vs 32,000
- higher CIPA rating of 530 vs 490 with EVF

So am I missing any that is still related? Is there anything else to consider?

Follow up. Size must really be important since I’m now seeing “new” A7RV for less than the A7CR here on FM Buy & Sell send they have all those additional kill features like great EVF, great LCD, two card slots, and 8 stop IBIS.

swldstn, the a7CR also includes a charger whereas the a7C II does not. For some reason, it is an advantage that no-one seems to discuss. It helps narrow the price gap if you want to have one.

I saw that but for me personally not an issue. Already own 4 Sony chargers and quite a few potable dual battery chargers 🔌 Also want to make sure it’s just not another listing error like the 1/8000 shutter speed spec.

The a7IV didn’t have a charger either, just a USB and a small brick. My a7sIII did. No surprise the CR got one and the cII didn’t. It sucks, but lots are skimping on chargers these days.

I'd only consider abandoning the mechanical shutter if there were a global shutter available or at least an A1-type sensor. The combination of a slow readout and the absence of a complete mechanical shutter is a deal-breaker for me.

I never even bothered to take the chargers out of the box on my A1 and A9. I prefer the small double battery chargers made by Watson.

Which smaller camera is one question, the other is which small, high IQ lenses to match it..

I voted that I'm keeping my A7C as initially I wasn't set on getting either of the new cameras currently but after they became available for pre-orders in Japan this morning I decided to go for A7CII after all and I pre-ordered one (all Black version). I'm still keeping my original A7C as well. I prefer the 24MP to 36MP resolution range over 60MP+ as I don't intend to utilize cropping in general and wouldn't want to deal with the too large files all the time.
