Are you referring to my sarcastic quip about AF improvements after this minor FW update?
Sadly, in my 20+ years experience in software engineering, my team has pushed 100s of minor and major versions of APIs
and Websites and Apps out and still do on a weekly basis. 15 more years to retirement!!!!
I was just happy that the FW update was so easy on the z8 - download .bin file, pop in SD card to laptop, etc.
I am 2 versions behind on my Sony a1 where the instructions are pretty annoying, especially for Mac users.
Which is a good thing as there are many who swear that the latest version or the one before that, has made the AF worse.
With the new camera bodies, I believe Sony has finally caught up to others in allowing FW updates via card. ...Show more →
Oh haha, no I wasn't referring to anyone's comment in particular. Sorry if you thought I was singling you out. Over on NR there is plenty of whining about no groundbreaking feature additions to this brand new camera with a X.X.1 update Typical for that place though, along with a number of Z6/Z7 users still wondering when a FW update will magically transform their cameras into Z9's.
Indeed the Nikon FW update method could not be simpler - dump the .bin into the root directory and hit update. There is even an option when you're done to clear the FW file and keep using the card as normal. You can do it via Snapbridge too but I don't use that.

I was out today with my Z9 and 800PF with the new 4.01 FW. I know there was no mention of any AF improvements but today I shot just over 1,000 images and noticed much less, what I call, AF drift. That is when in a burst, you will get sharp photos, but you will notice some not 100% tack sharp (though 90-95% of people would still say they are sharp) as most in a burst. It could be placebo effect, but today I had virtually zero AF drift in my 1,000+ images. Curious if anyone else noticed this as well. Nikon has been known to not mention a few small tweaks in FW upgrades in the past so who knows. Has anyone else been out shooting with the new FW update and notice this?
Also corrected is the first image in a burst having a warmer WB when shooting Auto or Auto Natural Light WB. Nice that they corrected that so quickly....Show more →
Yes i have with the Z8 and 24-120 4s the same experience, i was thinking that i was getting better
Also that switch in color temperature did not show up this time.
i hope with ftz2 and 70-200 fle its the same outcome

Anyone try the updated firmware with their E to Z adapter?
I want to make sure they didn't do something like what happened with Z9 firmware 4, which disabled the Megadap adapter
(later fixed with Megadap firmware, but still, I'd like to not disable use of a lens).
I updated my z8 FW yesterday and this morning, briefly tested the Megadap ETZ21 with my Sony 70-200 GM ii.
Works fine.
If it matters, I've never updated the ETZ21 FW since I bought it.

I updated both yesterday. The Megadap firmware was much needed to solve several issues with the 50/1.2 GM in single shot focus.

Now that you have had a bit more time with the new firmware, do you still think that it has improved AF?
No, with the F lens i dont have the feeling the af is improved.
It is real hard to say, there are to much surroundings ad the moment to be sure.
also the color temperature was there again... i shoot raw, so no real problem.
