p.1 #1 · ** New firmware for Z8 -- V1.01 **

Oh joy, Nikon just now released a minor firmware update for the Z8:

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/fw/495.html

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.01
• Changed the timing of the high-temperature warnings appearing when the camera’s internal temperature increases mainly during video recording.
• Changed the position where the memory card high-temperature warning is displayed in video mode.
• Fixed the following issues:
- The battery would draw down more quickly while the camera was off if [ON] was selected for [Connect to smart device] > [Wi-Fi connection] in the [NETWORK MENU] even if [OFF] was selected for both [Bluetooth connection] and [Upload while off].
- Focus could still be adjusted using the focus ring when [Disable] was selected for a15 [Manual focus ring in AF mode] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU] if an option other than [Non-linear] was chosen for f9 [Focus ring rotation range] in the [CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU].
- SB-800 flash units would sometimes stop responding after pictures were taken with the flash disabled.

Part of the Instructions ..
"Insert the memory card into Slot 1 on the camera and turn the camera on."

So, that rules out using the SD card?
My MBP has a SD card slot, but if that's not an option then I'll have to buy a card reader for the CFExpress card.

Or you use Snapbridge. I never did a FW update via the app but know from several people that this also works that way.

EDIT: Snapbridge FW update on a Z9 but guess it will be the same for the Z8

Thanks Vinnie ... had that battery drain issue hit me hard a couple of weeks ago on the Oregon Coast.

i think it will work, if there is no other card in the camera.

Like I've always said, use airplane mode and these battery woes will magically disappear.

This is true. However, I will say I’ve noticed my Nikon bodies to be significantly better at idle battery drain when off than my Canon bodies. If you aren’t in airplane mode and you have a camera sit for a week, the battery will drop 50-70% in that time. I am only dropping maybe 20% on my Z8 and Z7 II in the same timeframe.

Apparently, my Z8 thinks the SD slot is Slot 1, because it wouldn't update when I put the firmware on the CFE -- only when it was on the SD. Turns out you can tell the camera that either slot is "primary," and that seems to mean "Slot 1" to it

Anyone try the updated firmware with their E to Z adapter? I want to make sure they didn't do something like what happened with Z9 firmware 4, which disabled the Megadap adapter (later fixed with Megadap firmware, but still, I'd like to not disable use of a lens).

No I do not use or have that adapter, but if you update to the new FW and it doesn't like the adapter afterwards, you can simply just put the 4.0 or whatever FW you know works and downgrade with no issues. Just install a FW like 4.0 or 3.10 like it was the first time you installed it. Each FW is a total and complete FW, not an incremental update that needs what's already on the camera.

I didn’t know Nikon would allow firmware downgrades (a lot of manufacturers to not).

Was able to update easily, by pulling out the CFExp card and using just the SD card .. yay!
Now to test if I notice anything different (hopefully better different) in AF speed, battery usage, etc.

The only thing I'm hoping for in this is a fix to the bug where sometimes the 3D tracking box stops responding to joystick input. Every once in a while, it'll seem to lock in position and I can't adjust it until I turn the camera off or switch AF modes. I can tap and adjust position, but not move it with the joystick. Seems to happen just randomly every so often. It's not a super common occurrence, but when it happens, I could potentially miss shots.

Oh, and for those wondering, as you might expect with a 0.01 release, there wasn't any issue with my ETZ adapter.

You can tell how exciting the firmware update will be by looking at what decimal points changed, as that is standard software/firmware nomenclature to indicate the degree of change / importance.

1.0.X updates will be very minor, usually bug fixes for things many people don't even know about (like this one)

1.X.0 updates are minor, usually improvements on existing features rather than just bug fixes. For example new lens support, custom AF area modes, better flicker reduction, etc.

X.0.0 updates are major, usually new features that significantly affect the user experience or possibly even change the market positioning of the camera (i.e. internal 8K60P 12bit RAW, pre-capture, 120Hz EVF refresh rate, 120fps stills, etc.)

My Z9 can literally identify subjects and take pictures by itself without me even being present, but still no way to assign Auto ISO minimum shutter speed to a Fn button + dial.... Here's hoping that comes to the Z8/Z9 in the next one.

Or if you're Sony, breaking your flagship camera and making your users ponder changing to Nikon

Canon did something similar with the R3, R6, and R5C. They all had FW updates which introduced significant bugs that had to be pulled, and they were not always quick to do it

Nikon is far from perfect but their FW team doesn't seem to make too many mistakes.

Are you referring to my sarcastic quip about AF improvements after this minor FW update?
Sadly, in my 20+ years experience in software engineering, my team has pushed 100s of minor and major versions of APIs
and Websites and Apps out and still do on a weekly basis. 15 more years to retirement!!!!

I was just happy that the FW update was so easy on the z8 - download .bin file, pop in SD card to laptop, etc.
I am 2 versions behind on my Sony a1 where the instructions are pretty annoying, especially for Mac users.
Which is a good thing as there are many who swear that the latest version or the one before that, has made the AF worse.
With the new camera bodies, I believe Sony has finally caught up to others in allowing FW updates via card.
