First of all I'd rather be in Maine!
Kayaking in Maine sounds perfect, glad you were able to have this close encounter with the Kingfisher Rich Looks like the combo of Nikon body and Canon glass is working well
Great captures!

Terrific shots Rich and from a kayak no less, makes even better. Very well done, it sure looks like that combo of camera and lens worked very well for you.

That last one is a standout Rich. Are you using support or hand holding?

Morris, these were handheld. I usually use a monopod in the kayak, but the 500 is a lot longer than my 100-400 I usually use which makes it a pain to lift and shoot with the monopod attached.

I've seen people mount a tripod to the front deck of there kayak. I've always shot handheld out of an open canoe or ocean canoe.

Man! Love that last one. Unique pose showing casing its head crest. At first I thought it was a female due to the browning of the belt...but I think they have more browning within their chest. Regardless....well done!

That combo of gear performed admirably with you, Rich!

You got nice poses on pleasing perches.

Very nice! I have also been venturing out with my kayak lately, and bringing the R8 & 100-400 along for the ride. I will be taking the monopod out next time to see how that goes. Please keep sharing your keepers from the yak!

** What yak are you using, if you don't mind me asking

The cabin we stay at has quite a few different types. The one I usually use is a “Loon” from LL Bean. Pretty heavy duty kayak.

Wow...as others have said, a beautiful series capture of a very agile flyer. I summer in Bridgton (ME) on Highland Lake and the Kingfishers are very tough to follow, cheers to you...

Regards,

Edd

Great shots of that elusive Belted Kingfisher. It has been on my bucket list for several years and a couple of weeks ago I managed to capture one, but not as nice as the ones you are posting here. I like the third image the most.
