p.1 #1 · Oregon Coast, Watching my back for Cougars

I don't usually get spooked, Free Diving, Mtn Biking, late nights in weird cities etc. Lots of Cougar Sightings on the Oregon Coast as of late and standing in the pitch black with no light didn't feel right this time There was actually a cougar on Haystack Rock a couple weeks back.

Either way would have liked to play around a bit more with framing etc but grabbed some shots at 1am and booked it. That random light to the right is what I believe to be a fishing boat.

Very nice shot -- the sea looks quite dreamy in the area to the right of the Haystack. Is the lighting of the rock natural (from the town? other light source?) or did you have some sort of light source?

It's a shame there's the sign at the front, but people would probably be clambering all over the rocks if it weren't there.

Yea where I was standing was pitch black but there is ambient light from homes/street lamps etc. So that light was all natural. There is actually a ton of sea foam in this picture which looks like the ocean but wasn't moving so it looks like the water line was up higher than it was.

Yea there are so many people here at low tides with crews of people keeping you off the rocks. Necessary evil!

Ah right, I was wondering whether you had layered two shots together or something like that. I was there a couple of weeks ago to photograph sea birds, but the sky wasn't visible due to the sea fog. It's lovely to see this view of the rock as the version I encountered was a lot more dull and drab!

(I would have loved to see the cougar, too, but even at dawn there were enough people around to scare off any visiting big cats.)

Are you referring to the light illuminating the cloud layer? That would be a helluva big (bright!) fishing boat, if so. Are these two different exposures (foreground and sky)? What was the date this image was captured?

This is a single exposure, taken this past Saturday night. Not a big fan of multiple exposures, nothing against them its just not my cup of tea.

15 seconds at F/2

Also the light had to be something moving, it disappears briefly at times. Really odd that it was so bright but I have no idea what else it could be.

Sounds like it had to be; I know they use lights, but wow, those are bright!

I have done ocean night shots and that certainly looks like a fishing boat. At 15 second exposure the lights they have on deck are almost as bright as the moon. That ambient town light certainly gives haystack a warm glow.

I had to google that story of a cougar climbing haystack rock and now I am terrified. Cool photo.
